STEPHEN MATLOCK
Stephen Matlock was born abt 1773 SC. Stephen married 1st Mary Standley March 5, 1809 Tattnall Co GA, Mary died Oct 14 1837, Stephen married 2nd Mary Copeland August 26 1838. Mary was born 1817 and died December 30 1847 Tattnall Co GA. Stephen died October 28 1853. They all three are buried in the Matlock Family Cemetery on the family land in Tattnall Co GA, near the Altamaha River. NOTE: Some of the work on Stephen has been done by Lynn Meador Hall lmhall@houston.rr.com
Stephen first appears on a deed 1788 as coming from Orangeburg, SC with John Duke to buy land granted in 2 grants: 287.5 acres granted July 1, 1788 on the Altamaha River 2 miles below Oswell's Bluff and the other being 400 acres granted Jan. 14,1788 on the same river. The other deed is dated Oct.27,1799. This may have been a contract for deed with the actual deed recorded after payment in full.
Stephen Matlock was not of age in 1788, being abt 15 at the time the land was bought. John Duke is on the 1790 SC Census as being a single man, head of household with 1 teenage male living with him. I believe that was probably Stephen Matlock, who had been orphaned and that John Duke may have been his guardian or just a relative of some kind, who took him in. Later, John Duke married and moved to Georgia. On August 6, 1806 Duke transferred the land to Stephen Matlock by transfer of grantor's rights and titles. Possibly the land was bought with money Stephen inherited and that is the reason John Duke transferred it to Stephen Matlock when he was of legal age.
1799 Oct 22 Elijah Lewis, planter, & Sallie, his wife of Liberty Co., Ga. to John Duke and Stephen Matlock both of Orangeburgh Dist. S.C. Deed dated 22 Oct. 1799, conveying 687 1/2 acres in Liberty Co. granted grantor in two grants, one of 287 1/2 granted him July 1788 and lying on the Altamaha River two miles below Oswell's Bluff, and the other being 4oo acres granted him 14 Jan. 1788 on said river bounded SW by Henry Wheeler. Stephen Matlock died October 28,1853, leaving a large estate, which took about 6 years to settle. Co-executors were his son Stephen Matlock and his daughter, Florida's husband, Eliza Tillman. Evidently, his eldest son, John, was disinherited for he was not listed as one of 7 heirs who drew lots out of a hat to decide who would inherit 7 slaves for each heir from the 47 slaves in the estate in 1854. About 1856 or 57 the disinherited son, John, went to court to challenge the way the executors were administering the estate. Later, court records reveal that Stephen Matlock and Elza Tillman, as executors had to pay $100.00 in legal fees for this law suit.

Royston, or the old cotton-mill, is a place of interest. In 1856 Henry Merrill built a cotton and wool-carding factory, at a point on the Little Missouri River two and one-half miles north of Murfreesboro; here there was an excellent water power, where there had been an old grist-mill for many years prior. He did a small business in the way of spinning thread and carding wool till about 1860, when it was sold to John Matlock. During the war he moved the mill to Texas, and ran it in that State in the interest of the Confederate Government. After the war he returned and re-engaged in business at the old site. This was the only grist-mill in this locality at that time, and people came from long distances to mill and to buy cotton yarn, with which nearly all the clothing of that time was made; he also had a store and did the largest commercial trade in the county then. Soon after he put in looms, and began to manufacture cloth. In 1875 he erected a large new mill, equipped it well with all needful machinery, and Royston soon took on the dignity of a village of some 200 people, but Mr. Matlock became financially involved and committed suicide in 1886. The other owners of the mill, composing the Arkansas Manufacturing Company, removed the plant to Arkadelphia in 1889.
