Stephen Matlock was born Sept 17 1822 GA. Stephen married Elizabeth Tillman Dec 30

1841 Montgomery Co GA. Elizabeth died Aug 10 1896, Stephen died Nov 13 1903 and both

are buried in the Bear Creek Cemetery Shelby Co TX.

Stephen Matlock Sr. died October 28,1853, leaving a large estate,

which took about 6 years to settle.  Co-executors were his son Stephen Matlock and

his daughter, Florida's husband, Eliza Tillman. Evidently, his eldest son, John, was

disinherited for he was not listed as one of 7 heirs who drew lots out of a hat to

decide who would inherit 7 slaves for each heir from the 47 slaves in the estate in

1854. About 1856 or 57 the disinherited son, John, went to court to challenge the way

the executors were administering the estate. Later, court records reveal that Stephen

Matlock and Eliza Tillman, as executors had to pay $100.00 in legal fees for this law

suit.

Obit:

 J.S. Matlock, 74 years of age, father of Mrs. D. M. Brown of Center, died in Houston

 Wednesday night July 22, 1925 after a long illness. Mrs. Brown was with her father

 at the time of his death. Mr. Matlock formerly lived in Shelby County.  He was a

 brother of Mrs. J.C. Hall of Patroon. Funeral services were held at the old home in

 Liberty county Thursday. Mr. Matlock was married a second time in Liberty county and

 is survived by ten children.  Mrs. Brown being the only child by the first wife.
