Little Rock - Governor McRae has appointed R L Berry of Yellville as

special county and probate judge of Marion County, to serve during the

physical disability of Judge Sam Matlock. The disability of Judge Matlock

was certified by Circuit Judge J M Shinn. The nature of Judge Matlock's

disability was not given.

CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF ARKANSAS pg 624

Sanford Matlock was a representative sitizen of Yellville and County

Judge of Marion Couny at the time of his death, which occurred Sept 8

1921, He was born in Taney Co MO on the 9th day of Jan. 1855, a son of

Smith and Letsey Shelton Matlock, both natives of Perry Co TN. The father

died on the 10th of March 1906 at the age of 78 while his wifes demise

occurred in 1862. In 1851 Smith Matlock removed form his native state MO

himself and built a log house and some outbuildings. Mr Matlock was three

times. Sometime after the death of his first wife, the mother of our

subject, he married Miss Emaline Jacob whose demise occurred three yrs

later. His third wife, Harriet Hand who is also deceased. Four Children

were born from the first union: Luke, Nancy and Mat, all deceased.

Sanford being the only family member living. To the second union three

children were born: Alfred, a successful farmer of Marion County; Letsie

a resident of Marion Co and John.

The Mountain Echo, September 15, 1921 Issue: Judge Sanford MATLOCK.

Judge Sam MATLOCK was born near Salem, Dent County, Mo., January 9th,

1855, and died September 9th, 1921, at his home near Pleasant Ridge

church, in Cowan barrens. He leaves six children and a host of friends

to mourn his loss. The large number who attended his funeral was evidence

of the high esteem in which he was held. The Judge, first of all, was

devoted to his family which speaks well for any man. Then he was a

Christian gentleman, holding firmly to that he deemed right. He upheld

the church and was a regular attendant on religious services. Home was

dearest place to him, and next, came Pleasant Ridge Church. He was a

useful, public man, and at the time of his death he was our efficient

County judge. He has gone to a better land and bye-and-bye, we shall

see him again. On Saturday, September 10th, we laid him away in the

Pleasant Ridge cemetery in the presence of a large congregation.

Religious services were conducted by the writer, his pastor, and with

Masonic honors his body was interred to await the resurrection of the

just. I. L. Claude. [Also] Judge MATLOCK Dead. The many friends of

Judge MATLOCK throughout the county were grieved to learn of his death

which occurred on Thursday night of last week. Several weeks ago he

suffered an attack of typhoid fever, and being over anxious to get out

and look after the duties of his office as county judge he, against the

advice of his friends, got out before he was really able to do so. An

abscess developed on his right lung which caused his death. He was

serving his second term as County judge, and his whole soul was in the

discharge of the duties of the office, and his friends regret that he

could not live to serve out his term. The Echo joins his many friends

in extending sympathies to the bereaved relatives

The Mountain Echo, March 29, 1928 Issue: Jack Matlock Dead. Jack Matlock, who lived a few

miles south of Yellville, after having lingered for many months with tuberculosis, died

at his home about 6 o'clock Saturday morning. Funeral services were conducted at the Pleasant

Ridge church Sunday afternoon by Rev. Villines, after which interment was made in the Pleasant

an affectionate husband and loving father. He leaves a widow and seven children, all girls, two

sympathy of their many friends in their sorrow. [Also] Card Of Thanks. We desire to thank all of

the friends and neighbors for their kindness shown during the long illness, death and burial of
