Rueben Medlock was born
abt 1829 SC. Reuben is thought to be the son of William and
Rebecca
Medlock. Rueben left South Carolina and in 1850 he is
found in Chattooga Co GA. It appears
that perhaps he went to
Georgia where his Uncle Thomas, and
Cousins John and Rueben were
living. Rueben married first Charlotte Smith.
To this union two sons were born, John J born
1853 and William Henry
born 1856. William Henry can be traced, and if anyone knows
anything
about John J, please contact me. Charlotte died abt 1856 and Rueben
married 2nd Margaret
Alexander July 20, 1862. To that union one son was
born; James Riley. Rueben joined the
3rd N. C. Infantry, Co. I and
died during the war on Feb 5th 1865 and is buried in
the
Knoxville TN. National Cemetery.

Co I 3rd NC Infantry
Margaret Medlock, age 30, Green River Henderson County, NC and
widow of Reuben Medlock
who was a private in Company I, commanded by Capt. Morrison, 3rd
NC Regiment of
Volunteer Mounted Infantry, personally appeared before Clerk of
Court of record for
Madison County, NC. Margaret swore that her maiden name was
Alexander and that she had
married Reuben on or about 1 Oct 1862 at Greenville in the
County of Greenville, SC by
George Keith. She stated she had no written record of their
marriage. That Reuben died
in Knoxville on or about May 25, 1865 of diphtheria contracted
while in service. She
declared
that she had remained a widow and in no way fostered the aid of
the Rebellion.
L. McPherson
of Washington DC was her attorney. Her claim includes the name
of James R.
Medlock born 30 Sept, 1863 as one of the children. Evidently
there is another line which
can't be read and
Thomas J. Medlock wonders if the 2 older children, John J. and
William
Henry, are listed there. Her post office address was Flat Rock,
NC. She signed with her
"mark".
B.A. Clark and M.E. Anderson, residents of Heywood County, NC,
swore they knew Margaret
to
be as she claimed and saw her sign petition. The claim was
signed by E.J. Tweed clerk
of
Madison, NC, County Court. US Dept of Interior received the
claim 1867 and signed and
filed at the pension office by L. McPherson.
Witnesses came forward and gave sworn statements to the claim.
The government supplied
the
Army records, Samuel J. Taylor and James Medley were with Reuben
when he died, bill
Johnson
and Pete Henderson and Reuben Brown knew both Margaret and
Reuben when they lived
in SC.
The substitute attorney appointed to administer vouchers for
Margaret was W.W. Rollins
near Marshall in Madison County. Thomas J. said that was a long
way from where Margaret
lived at
the Green Settlement near Flat Rock NC.
Claim Certificate # was 165.195. Her first voucher dated 14 Sep
1868 was for $328.63 to cover
from 2 April 1865 to 4 Sep 1868. A
separate voucher for James Riley was $50.60 to cover from
25 July 1866 to 4 Sep 1868.
Because of the distance, Margaret later moved to near Madison at
Stocksville, NC. Stocksville
was a short distance to Weaversville, Buncombe County, NC. Her
vouchers were sent to the
lawyer in Madison and then she had to
wait until they arrived and then journey there to pick
up her
money. That was about every 3 months. maybe this is how John J.
came to visit from
Sinking Springs and met the Melton girl in Weaversville. He
would have bee entitled to some
of the pension until age 16.
Margaret complained to the government and they investigated. All
vouchers to her were
accounted for. It was a baseless claim.
In 1879 Margaret left Stocksville and moved to Transylvania
County. She bought 25 acres
near John's Rock along Davison River in the Pisgah Mountains
near Brevard, NC. They lived
there until about 1898. Jane Elmina married m. William K.
Searcey and James Riley married
Nancy Janie Stamey. She had close friends in the
Stamey-Osteen-Searcey families but she
also kept close ties to those in SC.
Margaret Alexander Medlock died 5 July 1902 at 72 years. it is
not known where she was
buried.

In 1899 Margaret moved back to SC with James Riley and his wife
Nancy Janie Stamey. They
settled near Pelzer and her vouchers were sent to Ware Post
Office. The General Store and
Post Office was on Primary Road (long ago called the White Horse
Road) leading from the
NC mountains to Greenville. Thomas E. Ware said Margaret moved
to his place 1 April 1899
and
that his son E.F. Ware ran the store until Sep 1900. Here again
Margaret made a claim
that vouchers were being reduced. Through this endeavor Margaret
was arrested and taken
to Bigsby store where she was confronted by the Wares. She had
refused to sign her voucher
twice. Finally old man Ware. Oliver, offered her $10 and she
took the deal. In Dec 1901
the government agent investigated but never even talked to
Margaret. This just about did
her in. James Riley had moved his family to the textile town of
Liberty and Margaret was
living alone.
Margaret Alexander Medlock died 5 July 1902 at 72 years. it is
not known where she was
buried.
