LUKE MATLOCK

Divider

Luke Matlock was born about 1766 VA. For many years it has been thought that Luke was a son of Moore Matlock. Now with the study of DNA combined with genealogy research, there is a good possibility that Luke is not the son of Moore. Joe, an ancestor of Luke Kit # 14482 has a closer match 36/37 with those coming from SC than he does with a known ancestor of Moore, Kit# 26563.The DNA results show that it is a 33/37. Click here to see the DNA Results.

A Luke Matlock shows up first in Greenville County SC. While not

proven that this Luke is the one that is later found in Tennessee,

It is interesting to find Joe matching the SC group more than he

does the TN group.

In 1796 and 1797 on a Sullivan Co TN Tax List Luke Matlock shows up. From

1790-1794 Moore Matlock was of Sullivan County, with that in mind and the

fact that in 1811 Moore Matlock sold Luke Matlock then of Humphreys Co TN

is the basic reason Luke became the son of Moore.

As the DNA project is growing, one thing we have learned is, you

can't assume that a same surname person in the same area is related. But

for now, Luke is linked from Moore, for the simple reason that is where

most will look for Luke, as a son of Moore.

CHILDREN of Luke Matlock by census are thought to be:

1 FEMALE MATLOCK born before 1790. At one time it was thought

that Jane Bell who was on the 1850 Dickson Co TN Census who

has a 13 year Martha Matlock was the daughter of Luke. There is

some researchers who state that Jane Bell was actually a Leach,

and not a Matlock. Jane Bell was born Oct 31 1781 NC. and died

June 26 1872 Dickson Co TN, and is buried in the Jackson Cemetery.

It is unknown to me who Martha Matlock was the daughter of.

  1 William W Sooter born 1833 TN.

2 Edward Sooter born 1835 TN.

3 Martha Sooter born 1837 TN.

4 Benjamin Sooter born 1839 TN.

5 Marion Sooter born 1834 TN. Marion married Martha Matlock

June 7 1857 Barry Co MO.

Mrs. Martha E. Sooter died March 25, 1909, of cancer of

stomach, aged 65 years, 11 months and 15 days, at the

residence of her daughter, Mrs. G. G. Cooper in San

    Bernardino, Calif.

Mrs. Sooter was born in Tennessee in 1843; she left there

in 1850 and came to Barry County, Missouri, and lived near

Gadfly, now Corsicana. In 1857 she and Marion M. Sooter were

married and lived happily together, and to them were born

four children, three of whom are living, Mrs. S. M. Jones of

Berryville, Arkansas, E.M. Sooter of Maple, Arkansas, and

Mrs. G. G. Cooper of San Bernardino, Calif.

In 1861 Mr. and Mrs. Sooter moved to Carroll County Arkansas

and remained there until the close of the Civil War in 1865.

Marion Sooter was killed and buried five miles south of

Berryville, Arkansas. At the close of the war Mrs. Sooter

with her three children moved back to Barry Co., near

Washburn Prairie, where she lived nearly thirty years and

raised her three children. In 1893 she and the youngest

daughter, Mrs. Cooper, moved to Cassville, Missouri, and

lived here for two years, and then moved back to Berryville,

Arkansas, and has remained with the daughter, Mrs. Jones,

and the son, E.M. Sooter, since that time. About 18 months

ago she decided she would make a visit to her daughter in

Calif., which she did and was blessed with beautiful

mountains, scenery, flowers, and sunshine, that she enjoyed

up to the day she took sick, which was January 17, 1909.

Everything was done by her daughter, Mrs. Cooper and husband

and four of the best physicians of San Bernardino, Calif.,

and a trained nurse, to restore her to health, but to no

avail; they made her last days on earth as pleasant as

possible, but God called her home.

She was a devoted Christian and a member of the Washburn

Prairie Baptist Church for 30 years. She persuaded the

friends and everyone around her bedside to be Christians.

"Let us all live as one family and live together with Jesus;"

she repeated this over and over again. She was a devoted

Christian, an obliging neighbor, a true companion, and a

dear friend to so many. A blessed mother will be missed in

the home of all her children. There is a vacancy that can

never be filled, only by mother. Rev. Mark B. Shaw officiated

at the funeral service and the remains were interred in the

San Bernardino City Cemetery. The choir rendered very

beautifully " Asleep In Jesus," " Beyond The Smiling and

Weeping" and " When the Roll is Called Up Yonder I'll Be

    There."

Mrs. Sooter was a cousin of Mrs. ?. P. Mitchell and Preston

Matlock of this city, and her husband M. M. Sooter was a

cousin of W. H. Brown, living north of this city. Exeter,

    Calif.
