March 22 – Louisville, GA, March 21 – This town was
thrown in a
fever of excitement last Sunday
afternoon with the news of the terrible
disaster
on the Savannah, Florida and
Western Railroad was announced.
Mrs. G. W. Kelly was a victim.
Mrs. Kelly had left Louisville one week
previous and had visited with her
only sister, Mrs. Medlock, in Savannah,
before proceeding to her future
home in Palatka, FL. Her husband, who is
a salesman for Lippman Bros. of
Savannah, has his headquarters there. Mr.
Kelly went to Jacksonville to meet
his wife of only 6 months. Not finding
her there he proceeded to
Waycross, GA then to Blackshear where he identified
her by the clothing she was
wearing. She was Miss Kate Robinson. Her remains
brought back to Louisville
and interred in the Louisville Cemetery. (Atlanta

Savannah Man Found Dead on Track of Coast Line
Savannah, Ga., September 25-(Special)
Under mysterious circumstances C H Medlock, of this
city, who is well
known in Macon, and other cities of the state, was found
dead this
morning near the sixth mile post of the Charleston and
Savannah division
of the Atlanta Coast Line. The right side of his face
and head had been
crushed in. The news of the discovery of the body was
telegraphed to
Charleston, the division headquarters. In an effort to
ascertain the
identity of the body, Savannah was acquainted with the
discovery, and
after a time it was found that the body was that of Mr.
Medlock. It is
not known whether the death was due to an accident,
suicide or murder.
Officers are now investigating. Mr. Medlock had not been
seen by members
of his family or friends since Thursday night, so far as
can be ascertained.
His affairs were in proper shape and nothing of a
financial or domestic
character is known to have been working. The body was
found with the head
upon the outer rail, the body projecting at right angle
from the rail.
Mr. Medlock was in the district messenger and furniture
removal and
storage business. He had many contracts for removals on
his books. He
leaves a widow, his second wife, and five children.
1904 Sept 28 NO SOLUTION OF MYSTERY
Jury Cannot Determine the Cause of Medlock's Death.
Savannah, Ga., September 27 (Special)
An inquest was held this morning to determine the cause
of the death of
C H Medlock, who was found dead on the tracks of the
Atlantic Coast Line
railroad, 6 miles from Savannah, at 11 o'clock Saturday
night. The Jury
brought in a verdict as follows: " We the jury, find
that C H Medlock
came to his death in a manner unknown to this jury.
Further, that there
was before us no evidence to show that the death was
caused by foul means.
The evidence before us tend to show that the death was
caused by Mr. Medlock
being struck by a train at the spot where he was found,
which train cannot
be determined by us." The mystery of Mr. Medlock's death
therefore, remains
unsolved.

John F Lovett, Jr the subject of this sketch, is a worthy representative of
a
very worthy family. The Lovetts
are numerous people, and wherever found
are noted as being food
citizens, intelligent, moral and
industrious. They
have always been identified with the growth,
development and best interests
of
their several sections. The Records of Screven County Ga, go to
show that
John Lovell,
a relative of
the subject of this sketch, was sheriff of that
county over a
hundred years ago. The Lovetts are
not distinguished, however,
as office holders. It is their
unassuming, substantial business ways that
form
their most marked characteristic. The father of John F Lovett
Jr., was
a native of
Screven County
and lived their all his life, following the business
of
planting, at which he was fairly successful,
dying in 1859. His father John
Finsley Lovett, from whom our
subject was from North Carolina. He
settled in
Screven County, Ga., at an early day, and in time
became a substantial planter,
dying and
leaving a large family and good property. The mother of John F
Lovett
Jr., nee Miss
Herrington,
was a descendant of one of the old families of Burke
Count,
which is also quite numerous and equally as
respectable.
Our subject,
John F Lovett was born in Burke Co Ga., August 16 1855. He is
not
therefore an old man.
His live
following that of most of his ancestors, has so
far been a
plain, uneventful one. His youth was spent on his
father's farm and
his education was obtained at the neighborhood
schools. At the age of sixteen
he
began clerking in a store in Waynesboro, Ga., and there began
the formation
of those
business
habits and laid the foundation of that knowledge of mercantile
affairs which have since stood
him well
instead. He opened a business for himself
in Sylvania, Screven
County, in 1877, and there has been working,
studying,
planning and growing since. His us a typical country
store of the south where
anything can
be had in the mercantile line, agricultural, provisional and
textile
--necessaries and luxuries.
He takes the
farmer's cotton and other produce and
gives him in exchange there for goods, wares and
merchandise,
useful and
ornamental, and thus illustrates the great law in
political economy, of supply
and demand.
The present proportions of his business show that this practical
demonstration is given to
the entire
satisfaction of his customers and to the
enhancement of his own
interests.
He has no
partnership except that highest and holiest of all, which every
prudent
man forms early in life,
in the
selection of an industrious, economic, kind and
loving helpmate.
The lady who bears this relation to him was a
Washington County
girl, whose maiden name was Maggie Medlock.
