JOHN MEDLOCK (II)

John Medlock/Matlock, noted as "Ju" in the Saint Peter's Parish records

of New Kent County, Virginia, is believed to be the son of John Medlock

and his first wife Anne. As with John 1, the same holds true for John 11,

in the fact that it is unknown exactly when John 11 was born, where he

was born or who he married. It is possible that John 11 was born abt 1676.

The year 1676 comes from the thoughts the if John was at least 25 years

old when his son George was baptized, that would place John being born

  around that time.

Many have thought that John 11's wife was Hester Watson. Using the year

1676 as when John 11 was born, makes it impossible that this John was

Hester's husband. Hester's father William Watson named his daughter

" Hester Medlock " in his will, which was dated 1689. John would of

only been 13 at that time.

1733 December 5 Mark Anthony of St. Pauls Par., Hanover Co., planter,

and Hester his wife to John Clayton of Williamsburg, James City Co.,

Esqr.; for twenty  shillings; 50 a on branches of Mattadequin Creek

Watson late of James City Co., dec'd., by patent 8 Oct 1672 whereby sd.

Watson by his Last Will and Testament bearing date 15 April 1689 devised

to the sd. Hester by the name of Hester Medlock and to her heirs forever.

Mark (x) Anthony Hester (x) Anthony Wit:  Thos. Prosser, Ben Walker, Jam.

Power (“Cavaliers & Pioneers” by Nell Marion Nugent; Vol. 3)

The earliest and first records of the Medlocks, comes from the Saint

Peters Parish of New Kent Co. Virginia Parish records.

Anne wife of Jno medlock dyed the 23 march 1699/1700.

Jno medlock and          married the 27 April 1701.

George Son of John medlock Ju& baptiz ye. 8 June 1701.

William Son of Jno medlock baptiz the 19 July 1702.

Thomas Son of Jno medlock Ju& born 21 Nov 1703

By 1704 it is showing that a John owned 350 acres. (Virginia Quit Rent

Rolls New Kent County Rent Roll)

  & St. Pauls, Anno

  John MEDLOCK  350 Acres

It was in 1704,that the western half of St. Peter's Parish was split

off to form St. Paul's Parish. The new parish was bounded on the south-

east roughly by Matadequin Creek (which later became the boundary between

New Kent and Hanover Counties), on the north by the Pamunkey River as far

as the fork of the South Anna and North Anna rivers, and continuing north

-west from there to the limit of settlement (see Figure 2). The new St.

Paul's Parish included the area where John Medlock 11 lived, and

eventually the parish became a part of Hanover County when that county

was divided from New Kent County in 1720 (The Vestry Book of St. Paul's

Parish, Hanover County, Va, 1706-1786", transcribed & edited by C. G.

Chamberlayne, published by The Library Board [of Virginia], Richmond,

  1940, reprinted 1973)

Map of St. Paul's Parish

St. Paul's Parish was similarly divided in 1726 when St. Martin's Parish

was separated from it. The new parish included all that part of St. Paul's

Parish lying in the fork of the Pamunkey (made by the junction of the North

Anna and the South Anna Rivers) together with all that part of the original

parish lying north-west of Stonehorse Creek. The reduced area of St. Paul's

Parish now extended from Matadequin Creek on the east as far as the fork of

the Pamunkey to the west and as far as Stonehorse Creek for the territory

south of the South Anna. Moreover, in line with the change in setting

boundary lines of counties and parishes as river courses rather then

ridgelines, first adopted in 1691 by the Virginia General Assembly, in 1725

land was added to St. Paul's Parish to the south-west. From the ridgeline

between the Pamunkey/South Anna Rivers and the Chickahominy River, which

was the original parish boundary, the new boundary was now extended all the

 way to the Chickahominy River.

From what information that we have, it can be said that John Medlock lived

on Taylor's Creek in what was Hanover Co.

On March 24 1725, John Matlock bought 400 acres for 40 shillings, this

land was adjacent to William Wetherford and John Stanley. (“Cavaliers &

Pioneers” by Nell Marion Nugent; Vol. 3 pg 299;  Patent Bk 12 page 388)

The next records we have mainly mention John Matlock as a neighbor. It

isn't until 1733 before we run across a deed pertaining to John.

It was in 1726 that St Martin's Parish was separated from St. Paul's Parish

and it appears that John Matlocks land was to fall in the new parish

 boundaries.

1737 Aug 3rd " where Mr. Samuel Saxton paid a year note to John Medlock

(“Accounts from the Store of Thomas Partridge and County Hanover Co VA

 1734-1756"Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly....pg 189”)

1737 is the last year the mentions a John Medlock in Hanover County. It

wouldn't be until 1743 before another deed is found that mentions a John

Matlock. None of the deeds that have been viewed ever mentioned a wife.

It is believed that John Medlock/Matlock 111 was born about 1712. If this

is so, this makes John 111, 25 years old in 1737, therefore one must

consider the Store account could possibly be that of John 111. We have no

records that show when John 11 died, it is thought that he died around

1733 when he freely deed 170 acres to his son George and daughter Mary.

We have no records of what took place to all the land John 11 owned. It

appears that he may of owned at least 750 acres. John 111 when found in

Louisa County VA no longer lived on Taylor's Creek, but is found living

 on Hickory Bear Creek.

There are only four children that are identified that are the children of

John 11. George and Thomas, from the baptism records, his daughter Mary

who married Benjamin Johnson, by deed and John Junior, (John 111) by deed

 from George to John.

8 BENJAMIN MATLOCK is thought to have been born about 1717. Many have

Benjamin also dying in 1717. There is the possibility that this

Benjamin is the one who shows up in Albemarle Co VA in 1747-1751.

If he’s not John 11’s son, then whose son is he? Is the Benjamin

Matlock who is in Albemarle (see below) perhaps the son of William

who was baptized 1702 in New Kent County?
