JOHN MATLACK

1683-1765

John Matlack was born 1683 in Gloucester Co NJ. John married 1st Hannah Horner May 20

1708 in Burlington Co NJ, 2nd Mary Lee in 1721. John died 1765 in Waterford Gloucester

Co NJ.

[John Matlack and his wife Mary moved from the old house to a new one he had built

eastward from the place of his removal and buried his wife Mary from thence about

the year 1764,himself dying about 6 weeks after his wife, being unwell at the time

of her interment at Haddonfield; died of old age.  I was in the old house this year

1819, observed the East End fast approaching to decay nor was it then fit to be

inhabited, the thumb latch of the door of the other side is where the family of John

Stafford then dwelt was marked 1 + M  which I think was done by his brother 1728 or

1721. William Smith. The wainscoating bearing evident marks of its being done by his

father William or the George or both; was hip-roofed as was the practice in those

days. [He had 19 by my Grandmother, she died (at Ash   ) buried, her husband died at

same place afterwards being sick, I remember both. He (John Matlack) lived to see his

youngest daughter Mary Hillman married etc.  He use to sow 2 acres of buckwheat for

greens. John Matlack's first wife died when her son John was a child.] ( The above in [brackets] is hastily written in Grandfathers notes and in parts not coherent - T.C.M )

T.C.M was Chalkley Matlack.  The Grandfather he was referring to is Asa Matlack, born

October 1, 1783.

John Matlack settled 3 miles east of Haddonfield on the north side of the most northerly branch of the main South Branch of Cooper's Creek.

In 1729 John had the following notice printed in the Pennsylvania Gazette.

New Jersey Archives, First Series, Vol. XI Newspaper Extracts, Vol. I Page 172

Run away from John Matlack Farmer, in the Township Of Waterford, in the County of Gloucester, a Servant-Man named Neal Macneal, an Irishman, aged about 20, wears an old Felt-Hat, a dark colour'd homespun Coat and Jacket, Leather-Breeches, grey Yarn Stockings, pair of old Shoes new mended, and one of 'em capped, of a pale Complexion, very much freckled. Whoever secures said Runaway, and gives notice to Benjamin Paschal in Market-street, so as his master may

have him again, shall have Forty Shillings Reward, and reasonable Charges paid by... Benjamin Paschal. (The Pennsylvania Gazette, The 22d of the 3d Month, 1729.)
