resident of
Randolph County
for 77 years
died suddenly
Sunday
evening while
attending
services at the
Methodist Church
in Clifton Hill.
Death was
caused by heart
trouble, from
which he had
been suffering
for several
years. Funeral
services will be
held Tuesday
afternoon at the
Clifton Hill
Methodist
Church, with
Rev.
Carl R Davis in
charge. Burial
will be in the
Clifton Hill
Cemetery. Mr.
Lay was born
October 30 1852,
near the New
Hope Church at
Ft. Henry, and
spent his entire
life as a
resident of this
county. He was
one of three
sons born to Mr.
and Mrs. William
Lay who
were among the
earliest of
pioneers of the
county. His
father a native
of Orange County
Virginia. His
mother Sarah
Matlock Lay, of
Caswell County
North Carolina.
Mr. Lay is
survived by his
wife who before
her marriage was
Mrs. Bud
Summers; one
daughter, Mrs
Tom Richardson
of Salisbury and
two sons, J C
Lay of Columbia
and W E Lay who
lives on
the farm near
Clifton. Also
two brothers
Charley and
George Lay of
Clifton Hill.
