W Matlock was born August 4th
1796 Carter Co TN. George married Margaret
Basset, 2nd Nancy Prescott, and
third Mary Brown. George W
Matlock died May 18 1875.
Margaret Basset was the daughter
of Nathaniel Bassett, George and
Margaret where named in
Nathaniel Basset's Will dated 1834
Hawkins County TN.
"Beginning
at a stake four poles west of my
stables, running due south to
the top of the
knob, then eastwardly with the
top of said knob to Sterling
Cooke's line, then with said
line north to a red oak near
George Matlock's house, then
with said
Cooke's line to the stage road,
then with Thomas Poindexter's
line
northwardly to a stake on the
south side of said road, then
west to a stake on my old line,
then with said line north to the
back line of my said old tract,
then west with the line of said
tract so far that a due south
line will strike the first
station near said stables "
"Seventhly. I give and bequeath
unto my daughter Peggy who has
intermarried with George
Matlock, my negro woman Winney
and my negro woman Sidea and her
child, a girl about two years
old, which three negroes,
together with the hire
of Sidea
eight years, I estimate their
value at nine hundred dollars,
to her and her heirs forever.
And I further give to my said
daughter Peggy two beds and
furniture at forty dollars each
which makes her share worth nine
hundred and eighty dollars"

the county aforesaid on
their oath aforesaid
present at a certain
Joseph Matlock late of
Said County Labourer
heretofore to wit on the
first day of November in
the
year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred
and forty three with
force and
arms
at to wit in the county
aforesaid did then and
there unlawfully sell
Spirituous
liquors to a slave which
said spirituous
liquors was then and
there intended to
be drank at the place
where the same was sold
at to wit in the county
aforesaid contrary to
the form of the Statute
in such cases made and
provided against
good morals to the Evil
Example of all others in
like cases offending and
against the peace and
dignity of the state and
the Jurors aforesaid on
their oath afore
said to further present
that on the first day of
November in the year of

eight hundred forty
three and on divers
other days and times as
well
before as since said
date at to wit in the
county aforesaid the
said Joseph
Matlock did
then and there
unlawfully sell
Spirituous liquors in
divers quantities to
Cato a slave of whom
Andrew Galbraith was
master to Harden a slave
of whom Cleon Moore was
master to Randal a
salve of whom Cleon
Moore was master
to Jo Ben Doctor &
Eliza Jane slave of whom
Robert Nall was master
to and
to Dee a slave
without permission so to
do as to each of said
slaves from the
respective owners,
masters mistresses or
owners of said slaves or
from the
agent or agents of said
owners masters
mistresses or overseers
of said slaves
or
from the agent or agents
of said owners contrary
to the form of the
Statute in such cases
made and provided
against good morals to
the Evil example of all
others in like cases of
offending & against the
peace and dignity of the
State.

Washington Matlock was an early
settler and farmer in the
Drippings Springs area. These
excerpts are from a booklet: "An
Historical Salute to Crawford
County" that was published by
the Crawford County Bicentennial
Commission on July 4, 1976.
The
first store was owned and
operated by George W Matlock,
who came to Crawford Co. in
1847. He gave the community land
on which to establish a cemetery
and he was buried there in 1875.
The first Post Office with
George W
Matlock as Postmaster was
established in 1870 and
discontinued the same year.
The post office was again
established in 1872 with Wallace
Deffenbaugh
as Postmaster.
