George Medlock was christened on June 8th 1701 St Peter’s Parish

New Kent County. George is the son of John Jr. George married

Hannah maiden name unknown, there is the possibility that Hannah

is the daughter of Edward Trotman. It is unknown when George or

Hannah died. The spelling of the Surname is found as both Medlock

and Matlock. For our purposes the name will be spelled as found in

the referenced record.

1733 March 1 I John Matlock Senr. of Hanover Co., planter, for Love

and Goodwill I bear to my loving Son George Matlock; freely give 120

a. in Hanover Co. at a corner maple at the mouth of a swamp called

Charles Swamp...up the swamp...on Tusocky branch down branch to

Taylors Creek John Matlock Senr. Wit: Natl. Williams, John Williams,

Jno. Wingfield  (12: P. 32)

On March 1733 George Matlock deeded to John Matlock Jr 100 acres on

Taylor’s Creek and Charles Swamp (William and Mary Quarterly pg 50)

George sold this land for 10 pounds  “being part of 400 a granted to

Edward Trotman late of Hanover, dec'd by patent. Signed, George

Matlock witness Nat Williams, Richard Henderson & John Williams.”

Three months later and on June 20 1733 John Matlock (now considered

Sr.) deeded his son George 120 acres in Hanover County. This land was

at the mouth of a swamp called Charles Swamp...up the swamp...on

Tusocky branch down branch to Taylors Creek.

A little over a year later and on July 5th 1734 George Matlock a planter

of Hanover County deeded again to John Matlock Jr. also of Hanover County

100 acres on a branch of Taylor’s Creek called Charles’s Swamp; part of

400 a. granted to Edward Trotman late of Hanover Co., dec’d, by patent.

Signed George (G) Matlock Wit: John Wade, John Dabney Hannah the wife of

sd. George relinquished her right of dower. (Hanover County, VA Court

Records 1733 – 1735”  pg 109)

The next mention of George Matlock was on Aug 20th 1747. Thomas Denton

bought 51 acres for 5 shillings described as “on the S side the South,

on the River Bank; adj. Colo. David Meriweather, John Glen, Robert

Clapton & George Matlock”. (Cavaliers & Pioneers by Hudgins ; Vol. 5

pg 312;  Patent Bk ??, page 123)

There are several deeds and information from Louisa County Virginia,

dating from 1767 to 1826 where George Medlock/Matlock is mentioned,

but there is no way at this time to know where George Medlock Sr.

begins and ends. While it may be difficult to identify the record

where George Medlock (Sr.) died and records for his son George begin,

it can be assumed that George Medlock (Sr.) died before 1800 and

probably by 1780 if not earlier. Currently it is believed that it was

George (Jr.) who died in Louisa Co VA in 1800, based on the Chancery

suit that identifies his siblings.

CHILDREN of George and Hannah:

1 GEORGE MEDLOCK JR. George appears to have never married based on all

available records. George died intestate in 1800 and the administrator

of his estate was John Dickson Administration on George's intestate

estate can be found in Louisa Co WB 4 p 133, 149-151 and WB 5 p 90 & 91
