MATLOCK

family, contact Tom

There is not
a lot of information on
George, what is known is that
on March 13 1845 George
married Martha L Hughes
in Lee Co IA. Although George
and Martha has not been
found on the
1850
Census, it is known that they had 3 sons
together between
1846-1849. George died
on his
way to Calif.and is buried in
Nevada City.
Gen. John Bidwell & Rev.
John Steele, Early Life
in California
ON Monday, Sept. 23,
1850, after a journey of
over six months our
little company
reached Nevada City in
the gold mines of
California, and on the
morning of that
day we were all together
for the last time.
In the early morning of
Tuesday, September 24,
my mess consisting of
John L Young,
George
Matlock, Abraham Hughes,
Isaiah J Hughes, Robert
McCord and John
Donnelley,
broke up; we
started out to begin
business in earnest, and
all that forenoon I
hurried from mine to
mine,
hopefully inquiring for
work. ( Page 122)
In the trials of our
long journey across the
plains, we became well
acquainted;
mutual
kindness and help had
taught us to respect
each other, and filled
our
hearts with grateful
memories, to be
cherished through life.
Although their
personnel
is given in Across
the Plains in 1850,
they will appear again
in
these pages, and I
therefore insert their
names. Those from Lee
County, Iowa;
John L. Young, George
Matlock, Abraham Hughes,
Isaiah J. Hughes, Robert
McCord,
John Donnelley,
Thomas Hunt, Anderson Tade, and Drury Farley.
( Page 135)
I now learned of the
death, a few days
before, of my very dear
friend, George
Matlock, with whom I had
crossed the plains, and
who had been
instrumental in
saving my life. A man
whose Christian
character was more than
a profession:
sweet in spirit,
self-denying, ready to
make sacrifice for the
sake of others.
A leader in every
difficult and dangerous
enterprise, and one
whose prudent,
firm, intelligent
courage insured success.
My own father could not
have treated
me with greater kindness
than I received from
him. But alas! alas! the
inexpressible loss and
sorrow of his widow and
family when the story of
his death
reaches them in their
far distant Iowa home.
(Page 161)
Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1851.
This afternoon Drury
Farley and Thomas Hunt,
an elder half-
brother,
arrived from Nevada
City, bringing the sad
news of the death of Mr.
Anderson
Tade, whom, in the
closing hours of the old
year, they had laid by
the side of his
friend and neighbor, Mr.
George Matlock. His
widow and family, whose
home is near
Fort Madison, Iowa, must
receive the painful
message that, while
hoping to brighten
their lives and better
their condition, he had
traveled thus far from
them only to
find a grave.
Martha married 2nd
Joel Smith on Aug 18
1851 in Lee Co IA. A
daughter Sarah
E Smith
was born to
Martha and Joel abt
1853. By 1854, it
appears that Martha had married
William A
Perry, between 1855-1859 two sons and a
daughter was born to
Martha and
William. It
is with William Perry
that Martha first
appears on the 1860
census. In
1870, William and Martha had moved
to Wayne Co IA, the
three Matlock sons,
remained
in Lee Co IA.
By 1880 William and
Martha and the Jasper Matlock
had moved to Mercer
Co
MO William died some
time after 1880 and
before 1900, Martha was
living in
Sullivan Co
MO. In 1910 Martha was
living in Pasadena Calif. and on
June 13 1916,
Martha L
Perry filled for Civil
War pension from
California,
on her son
Thomas
Matlock, who had died
March 1911 in San Diego
Calif. Martha was not
found on the
1920 census, it is
assumed she died
sometime after 1916 and
before 1920.

THOMAS J. MATLOCK,
farmer, Section 24, P.
O. Burrton, owns 480
acres in this
township,100 in
cultivation, with small
orchard, five acres in
cultivated
timber, 160 acres fenced
with barbed wire;
dwelling 14 x 24, L 14 x
20, barn
17 x 38, with stock
yards and sheds, and
windmill pumps and large
stock scales.
He also owns 160 acres
in Sedgwick County, with
100 acres in cultivation
and
dwelling 12 x 24. He
makes a specialty of
raising corn, cattle and
hogs, and
has at present 118 head
of graded and domestic
cattle and thirty hogs.
Was born
in Iowa in February,
1846, and made it his
home until he enlisted
in 1862 in
Company E, Nineteenth
Regiment Iowa Volunteer
Infantry, and was with
his command
in Missouri for one
year, then at the siege
of
Vicksburg and at Fordouch
Bayou
and at the battle of
Prairie Grove. Was
severely wounded by a
gunshot through
the leg and captured and
kept a prisoner for ten
months at Shreveport,
La., and
Fort Tyler and Marshal,
Texas, where he was
exchanged July 22, 1864,
and returned
to his command at New
Orleans, La., and
participated in the
final
engagements
of
the war at Goodes'
Landing, siege of
Spanish Fort and
surrender of Mobile and
saw
the last gun of the
rebellion fired by the
confederacy and was
mustered out July
10, 1865, and got his
final discharge at
Davenport, Iowa, July
25. After the war
he returned to Iowa and
came from there to
Kansas in March, 1871,
and homesteaded
his present place March
13. Was married March
26, 1868, to Miss Mary
J. Thompson,
a native of Iowa. They
have four children --
Lena, Nellie, George M,
and Alice M.
Mr. Matlock has always
taken an active part in
politics and educational
matters
and anything that tended
to the welfare of his
locality and has been a
member of
the School Board since
the organization of the
District and taught
school for six
consecutive winters and
served as Township
Trustee for three terms.
When the question
of voting bonds for
another railroad was
raised in the county in
1881, he took an
active part against it,
believing it was not to
the interests of the
farmers to have
a heavy bonded debt
hanging over the
county, thereby creating
a feeling in some
localities which has
been against him
politically. He thinks
this locality as good
a country as can be
found for combining
farming with stock
raising and has been
very
successful in his
business. (Harvey County
