Biographical Sketch:
Luther Matlock and Mainer Canada were married October 26, 1897 at Metropolis, Illinois. Brother Luther was elected Sunday School Superintendent in 1898 and served in that capacity until his death. He was also elected a Deacon of the Church in 1898 and served in that office until his death. He was a church clerk and served in every office of the church from time to time. He organized Sunday School at Newton Creek in the year of 1898 with six to ten members. His influence and work followed him all the days of his life and will continue to live on through Newton Creek Church and it's members. His life and actions in and out of the church were above reproach, and he always had a kind word about everyone. Although Luther and Manier never had any children, his love for the children of Newton Creek was obvious through his life's dedication to them. The present church was built in 1908 and dedicated in 1910. He gave his time and money helping to build the new church. He worked day after day without pay while it was being constructed with only one goal in mind - BUILDING FOR THE CHILDREN. Often he went on personal notes to help finance the building of the church. In the mid - 1920's it was a struggle to keep the church operating because of financial conditions, but through his leadership and determination, Newton Creek Baptist Church survived."Uncle Luther" (as everyone affectionately called him) possessed a great talent to promote the welfare of the church. He was a wise counselor and stood four square on all points of faith and doctrine. He was quick to detect anything that was not for the good of the church, community and for advancing "the cause of Christ." Uncle Luther was laid to rest in Newton Creek Cemetery December 13, 1955. His estate was settled with Newton Creek Cemetery being the beneficiary which was the start of the Cemetery Fund.
