Charles B Matlock was born more than likely abt 1791. James, son of Charles

listed his father as being born in NC, and his mother in SC. I wonder if

perhaps this should be the opposite. A daughter of Charles, listed him as

being born in SC. It is not proven who Charles was the son of.

 

War of 1812 Matlock Charles B 2 Reg't (Cocke's) W. Tennessee Militia Private

Corporal

 

"They Multiplied," of Matlock newsletter published in 1974, printed a power of

attorney where Charles B. Matlock of Dickson County, Tennessee appoints Pritchett

and ---- attorneys to recover his back pay for service in the war. This was dated

October 10, 1815. It says two payroll vouchers showing him in Cocke's West

Tennessee Militia, Capt. Francis S. Ellis'Company are mentioned. William Carroll,

Major-General 2nd Division of Tennessee militia certified that Charles B. Matlock

served as a sergeant in his division for six months and that he was honorably

1815 Oct 10 KNOW all men by these presents, that I Charles B. Metlock of Dickson

County and state of Tennessee for divers good causes and considerations me

hereunto moving have made, ordained, authorized, nominated and appointed and do

by these presents make ordain, authorise, nominate & appoint Pritchett and _

merchants of Nashville, Davidson county and state of Tennessee my true and lawful

Attorny, for me and in my name and for my own proper use to ask, demand, sue

for, recover and receive of Joseph Coleman (or his successor) District Paymaster

of the State of Tennessee all such sum or sums of money debts and demands whatsoever,

which are now due and owing to me the said Charles B. Metlock by and from the United

States, for my services as a Sergeant in Capt. Francis S. Ellis's company from the 3

day of _ 181?, as per my certificate of service herewith. And to have, to use and to

take all lawful ways and means, in my name, or otherwise, for the recovery thereof

by attachment, arrest, distress or otherwise, and to compound and agree for the same,

and acquaintances or other sufficient discharge, for the same for me, and in my name,

to make, seal, and deliver, and do all other lawful things, and acts whatsoever,

concerning the premises as fully and in every respect as I myself might or could do

were I personally present at the doing thereof. In witness whereof I have hereunto set

my hand and seal this 10th day of October, 1815. Witness present, John Read /s/ Charles

On this the 8 Day of March 1842 personally appeared before me G. M. Hargett-a justice of the

Peace etc, State of Alabama, Franklin County...We Theopilus Skinner, a clergyman residing in

the county and state above and Charles Brooks Matlock residing in the same hereby certify that

we are well acquainted with Robert Tharp that we believe him to be near one hundred years of

age that he is reputed and believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a solider

of the revolution and that we concur in that opinion. ..Sworn and subscribed the day and year

aforesai.Theopilus Skinner, Charles Brooks Matlock….And I George F. Hargett a justice of the

peace certifies that it appears to him that Theopilus Skinner who has signed the preceding is

a clergyman resident in the state and county and that Charles Brooks Matlock is a credible

person and their statements are true to the best of their knowledge. George F. Hargett J.P.
