CASWELL MATLOCK

 

Caswell Matlock, according to his tombstone was born Nov 10 1786. It is believed that Caswell

married Mary Merrick. Mary was born March 10 1790. Caswell's tombstone states that he died May

10 1826, Mary died Oct 18 1857. Both are buried in Benton Co TN.

Matlock conveys to Holland a negro girl. Made 18 July 1800 in 33rd year of Independence,

Dickson County, Tennessee 1805 Deed Book Volume A page 213 This Indenture made this tenth

day of January One Thousand Eight hundred and five Between SAMUEL PARKER of the County of

Dickson and State of Tennessee of the one part and John Holland of the said County and State

of the Other part Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of six hundred Dollars

to him in hand paid the receipts where of is hereby Acknowledged by the said PARKER hath

bargained sold alien Engaged and confirmed and by these presents do Bargain sell engage and

confirm unto the said John Holland his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of

land lying on both sides of Yellow Creek in the County of Dickson and state of aforesaid and

Bounded as follows Beginning at a stooping black Oak on Capt. Daniel William upper line sixty

four poles West of said Creek it being a part of a six hundred and forty Acre Tract of Land

Located in the name of Mary Rogers heiress of William Rogers and conveyed from the said Bryan

Farrior it is conveyed to the said SAMUEL PARKER and Turning East two Hundred and Twenty six

poles to a Mulberry and White Oak said Williams South East corner thence south to William

Parkers line thence with William Parkers line to the old Original Boundary line, Thence south

with said line to a Stake thence West Two Hundred and Twenty six poles to a Stake thence North

four hundred and fifty five poles to the Beginning Containing five hundred and Ninety acres

with all their developments and Other Appertainances thereunto Belonging or in any wise

Appertaining to have and to Hold the said five Hundred and Ninety Acres of land with Every part

thereof unto the said John Holland his heirs and Assigns forever, and the said SAMUEL PARKER

doth hereby Warrants and forever Defend the said premiss unto the said John Holland against the

Lawful claim or claims of any person or persons lawfully claiming the same In Witness whereof

The first settlement was made in 1819 by Willis and Dennis Rushing, on Rushing's Creek, about

six miles north of Camden. Among the early settlers were: David Watson, Lewis Graham, Joseph

Cowell, Zachary Barker, Benjamin Holland, Michael Fry, Cas Matlock, John Anderson and Jas. Wyly..

On Eagle Creek were William Hubbs, John Lomaner, Michael Frey, John Barnett, "Cos" Matlock and

1819 Aug 10 This Indenture made this tenth day of August, eighteen hundred and eighteen Caswell

Matlock of the County of Humphreys and State of Tennessee of the one part and James Crocket of the

County and State afroesaid of the other part Witnesseth that the said Caswell Matlock for and in

consideration of the sum of three hundred and eighty dollars to him in hand paid by said James

Crocket the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, he, the said Caswell Matlock, doth covenant

and bargain and sell, confirm unto the said James Crocket, his heirs, executors, administrators

and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land containing one hundred acre survey situate,

lying and being in the County of Humphreys and State of Tennessee on Golson Creek waters of Duck

River and bounded as follows -Beginning at a sassafras corner and white oak corner thence running

west on a conditional line between Caswell and Rachel Merrick one hundred poles to a hickory corner

thence running south twenty-three poles to a stake, thence west eighty poles to a stake thence north,

thence north one hundred poles to the beginning corner, containing one hundred acres be the same more

or less with all and singular the woods, waters, improvements, profits whatsoever to the said land

belonging or in anywise appertaining, to have and to hold the aforesaid hundred acres of land with

all its profits unto the said James Crocket, his heirs and assigns forever and I do hereby warrant

and defend the said hundred acres of land unto the said James Crocket, his heirs, executors and

assigns against myself, my heirs and assigns and against the lawful claims or demands of all person

or persons whatever, In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and fixed my seal the day and

date first above written - Signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of Robert Lawson John Crocket,

HUMPHREY’S COUNTY STRAYS.

 

Taken by Aaron Arnold, on Deer Creek, a Bay Mare, four years old, thirteen and a half hands high,

no brands, a few white hairs in her forehead, a bell batched in four places with a hogskin collar.

Appraised to $18

 

By Thomas Hubs on Tennessee, about ten miles above Reynoldsburgh, a Bay Mare about eight years old

branded on the near shoulder not know what, no other brads, or makes perceivable. Appraised to $65

 

By Caswell Medlock, on Eagle creek, a Bay horse supposed to be nine or then years old about fourteen

hands three inches high, the right hind foot white, several sadole spots on his back. Appraised to

$65 Also one black mare, both hind feet white, fourteen hands three inches high about eight years

old, shod behind. Appraised to $80

1822 Oct 10 This indenture made this 10th day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight,

hundred and twenty-two between John Matlock and Caswell Matlock both of the State of Tennessee and

County of Humphreys, Witnessth that I, the said John Matlock for and in consideration of the sum of

One Thousand dollars to me in hand paid by the said Caswell Matlock the receipt of the same is hereby

acknowledged by me have this day bargained, sold and by these presents bargain, sell, alienate and

convey unto the said Caswell Matlock a certain tract or parcel of land lying on Eagle Creek in the

county aforesaid and known by the name of Blackwells place and bounded as follows: To-Wit beginning

at a white hickory and dogwood on the East boundary line of the eight Range and in the Tenth Section

two hundred and forty-five poles North from the Southwest corner of said Section and running North

with the said line crossing said Creek two hundred and sixteen poles to a stake and two chestnut

Thence East one hundred and eighteen poles to a mulberry and and elm, Thence South crossing said

creek two hundred and sixteen poles to black hickories and a white oak, Thence West to the Beginning 

containing in all one hundred and sixty acres of land which land and premises with all and every part

and parcel thereof I, the said John Matlock do warrant and forever defend the title from me, my heirs,

executors, administrators or assigns or from any other persons claiming by virtue of title from me unto

the only use and benefit of the said Caswell Matlock, his heirs and assigns forever. In testimony of the

I Mary Matlock do hereby make and publish my last will and testament and hereby ? and making

Void all other wills by me at any other time.

 

1st I will to my son John Wesley Matlock a certain tract of land containing 31 1/2 acres acres

transferred to me by Solomon Copeland. Also a tract of 20 acres transferred from James White to

me all of which I do will to the said John Wesley Matlock.

 

2nd I do here by will to my daughter Rachel Fry a certain tract of land transferred from James

White to Hannah Matlock which was was granted to be by Court of Humphries County Tennessee

 

3rd I do will to my son Edward Lane Matlock a certain tract containing 20 acres transferred to me

by Thomas Jones as Sheriff of Benton County.

 

4th I do here by will to my son John Wesley Matlock, Rachel Fry, and Elizabeth White, one bed and

one bedcloset

 

5th I do will that my son John Wesley Matlock do sell the balance of my property and after paying

the Doctor Bill he then divides the proceeds of said property equally between John Caswell Matlock

and Mary Evans.

 

In Witness where of I do to this my last Will set in my hand and affix my seal this 16th day of

October one thousand, eight hundred and fifty one.

  John Barnett, died before March 1837; in March term of court settlement was made with his

  administrators and provision was made for his widow and family. His heirs and distributes

  were Nancy Harrison, John Johnson, Jeremiah Johnson, James Walker, Elijah Wood, Mary Matlock,

  Andrew J. Barnett, Eliza Barnett, Sanmartin Barnett.

  much of household goods

 

     " Feb 15 spent the day to sister Matlocks attend the sale of her property after the death of deacon Caswell

   Matlock who died Dec 24 aged 27 yrs I solicited contributions through the day for building the house of

   the lord at Kirtland Ohio so procured 25.00 cts from the honorable men & saints to be applied to that

   purpose then rode to br Grawleys 10 miles. I also contributed 6 dollars myself for the house of the lord"

  Sarena Matlock, have this day sold to Mansfield C. Barnett, for and in consideration of the sum of

  two hundred and fifty dollars to them in hand paid by Barnett, for a certain man slave named Tom,
