James Travis MEDLOCK signed his will in Cokesbury Village of Abbeville Dist 1875. his Village was first known as Tabernacle area, then became Mt Ariel, then Cokesbury from 2 Methodist Bishops Coke and Asbury in 1834. James Travis left everything to Martha J and his children for their lifetime , all to share alike. Property to be sold when Martha dies. James Travis Medlock, Jr. named executor.

8 March 1920  James T Medlock Jr. died on this date before he could sell the property as his stepmother was still living and she was given a life estate.

6 June 1923  On this date the brother of James T Medlock Jr., Joseph B Medlock, applied to be administer of the estate. 180 acres of land remained.

All creditors notified to send bill before next court in March. Appraisal before March 1 1805 . Appraisers: William Nobles, Ethan---- Thomas , Benjamin Darby Sr and William Harden. 7th Jan Darby and Nobles and Thomas appeared before Swearingen and signed . Inventory filed Jan 8 1805. Recorded in Book B pages 240 and 241. Jan 10 1805 Citation filed. Request order of Sale of Estate Jan 7 1805. At sale Creditors given 12 months to pay from Feb ? 1805  Buyers: Stephen Medlock , Sarah Medlock, Moses Medlock Phinias Sutton, Morgan Murrah, Samuel Medlock Jr,  William Bush, Davis Frederick, Samuel Medlock Sr, Joseph Jones, John Prize, Ezekial Bunship, Job Glover, Jonas Jenkins, Prescot Bush, William Swearingen, John Holmes, Russell Robertson, John Kent, Benjamin Jones, John Holmes Sr. Census shows Charles under 26 and the same for Sarah. No Children Listed. Was he an older son of Samuel?

1835 Nov 30 Edgefield County Box 19 Pkg 679  - Stephen Medlock.  Return and Settlement of Estate of Stephen Medlock, Dec’d. John Gomillion, Adm. Stephen died Jan 14 1834.
Return on Estate for 1834 and 1835. John Bauskitt , Att’y. Distributees: Milly- widow and 8 children: Van Medlock, Rachael Medlock, Samuel Medlock, Sophia Medlock, married John McVoy, Ellen Medlock, married Wilson Whatley, Martha Medlock married Brinton McClendon, Moses Medlock ( Died 25 Sept 1831 and left 2 sons George and Martin who each received ˝  of their fathers share), Zilpha Medlock.

LAURENS COUNTY

1837 April 3  Estate Papers of James MEDLOCK of 1800-1837 Bundle 51-34-37 Laurens County  Letters of Administration filed with Sarah Medlock, John Knight, Charles Jones giving $ 2500 as bond Sarah Medlock made Administrator .Warrants for Appraisement of Estate to be appraised before Jan 4 1837 to be done by John Knight, Charles Jones, Reuben Williamson and William Puckett.

May 17 1837  Appraisal Goods = $1224.76 including 2 slave children, Gracy and Isaac. Buyers: Joel Read, John Knight, Josephs Daniels, S. ? Smith, Thomas Taylor, Thomas West, Cornelius Cook, Gabriel South, S. H Smith, William Cook, John Hall, Thomas Medlock and others. Returns were filed each year Thomas Taylor paid a large lump sum of $225 for either the land he had bought from James or the slaves. Sale Cried at Bethel and Rockmount churches.  23 Dec 1843  Sarah Medlock asked for Settlement as her daughter had married and wanted her share. Widow  received $775.35 and $1550.22 was dvided between six children. Elizabeth Jane had married Walderman Murff.

1843 Dec. Laurens County Equity 1844 # 3 Bill Box 19 Elizabth Murph widow of  Randol Murph sues for petition of land to be shared by all children. 1 tract was 250 acres on waters of Saluda bound by land of John Knight and Mrs Sarah Medlock and others. Value of tract set at $1095 settled on widow to pay or a lot to child which said child was to have 2 years to pay. 2nd tract was valued at $547 to Minus Murph with 10 years to pay. Malachi, John P.,  Elizabeth , Washington and Margaret under 21. The five appointed commissioners could not divide the property equally so this division was their Decision. Commissioners were William Arnold, James Clardy, George French, John Knight, William Duren? (Dunn)

Caty Simmons and Samuel Beeks were suing an Absalom Medlock in 1843 and it was settled the end of 1844 by selling all of Absalom's property the Jan of 1845.It said that Absalom was the guardian of the children of a dec'd William Clardy.
Court order to Thomas Deen to search for runaway slaves and Thomas Deen is given permission for punishment of no more than 20 lashes on the naked skin. It is signed by Absalom Medlock and 2 others plus a John Clardy with the title of Clk of Court after his name--date is 1845.


In Lowndes Co MS Nathaniel B Medlock  is listed in a will of Mahala Medlock 3 March 1856 and proved 4 April 1856. Will reads son John J. Clardy and money he left his mother Mahala with $1 going to her son William Clardy and her son Logan Clardy. Calls Nathaniel B. Medlock her son and Drucilla Catherine Medlock her daughter. Leaves land to her husband Absolam Medlock. Clardy researchers believe she is Mahala Gains of SC who married William Clardy of SC . On his death she married Absolam. Absolam married again to Mary Bryan in Monroe Co MS on 1/15/1857. (Mahala could have been Mahala Simmons.)
