Dear Mr. Matlock,
Thank-you for your additional information. I do not know if you know anything about the Helen (Helena Gray) Matlock, Dallas Co. Ark.; John L Medlock and Cal Medlock of Hardeman Co. Tn. 1880. Helena was the widow of James M Matlock. They married in Franklin Co Ten. and went to De Soto Co., Miss. early ( See James M in the Encyclopedia and Helena in Ark, Census 1860). I have the feeling that the John L and Cal (Caleb) were grandsons of my own 3rd great-grandfather Littleberry Matlock and here are my reasons:
My Littleberry lived in Limestone Co Ala. in 1819/20. He had 3 sons under 21 in his household. He was still there in 1830, but in 1840 he was in Tippah Co Miss. In 1850 he was in the household of a daughter Emeline Matlock Smith (Mrs. Peter D.) His wife evidently dead at this time.In 1846 Tippah Co., Mary Martha Matlock bought 150 acres of land from William Shelby. I cannot find this woman in 1850 Tippah Co. She does not tie into the Medlock family from SC to Tn. to Tippah Co. This family was wealthier than my family and that is why I think the census takers used the Medlock Spelling. Anyway, in 1860 Tippah Co, I find the following listing:
# 1071-987 H Prince 59 b NC Mary 40 b SC 3 Prince children: Joel, Susan, and Wm. (not hers) then John Medlock 6 b Miss. Caleb 2 b Miss
#1072 D D Matlock 29 b Miss (1850 says Tn.) Nancy 35 b SC S Andrew 8 b Miss
Please see Civil War Pension Application of Louizie Medlock last issue of "They Multiplied". As you can see Louieze Prince Medlock was not his first wife. She says her husband died in Hardeman Co Tn in 1904 or 1906(?) D. D. was definitely a son of Littleberry Matlock. I am wondering if Mary Medlock Prince above was a widow of a brother of D D ? Or did he go to Hardeman because Louizie may have been a dau of H Prince above? I do not have census records for D D or May for 1870. They are probably in Tippah Co, Miss. The John Medlock and Cal certainly see to match those shown in Tippah Co. Miss in 1860 (Those shown 1880 Hardeman Co)
In going back over your family, I note that a Samuel Jefferson Matlock did not die until 1941. Surely there is a death certificate and these ordinarily show the name of the mother and father. Have you checked?
I checked the 1850 census of Tn. again (Index Only) and find one that might possibly match. I can read the actual census of 1850 but I think 1860 should also be read. to find out anything really helpful. In Jackson Co. Tn. there is a John Matlock 60 b Va. wife Polly (I'm sure you know Polly is same as Mary) 34 b Tn. (This would indicate she was probably the second wife) with children: Nancy 14 Lausan 12, Nathan 2 James 1, Elijah 1/12 (does not show birthplace of children on index) so might be a good idea to read it to see if James was born in Miss. (Or Ark?) Elijah could have died young. It did seem a little odd that your James was born in 1850 and the next child was born in 1855. And who ever read this Census for Bryon Sistler was a really lousy reader.
The Helena Gray Matlock that you mentioned was the ancestor(ess?) Of Mrs. Ione Matlock Treadwell (Mrs. J W.) Sincerely Jess Armstrong.
