Dear Mr. Matlock
My John Milton Matlock was born Aug 15th 1816 in Tenn. We know he had brothers and sisters: James, Absalom, Minerva and Mary. We have a Bible Record which says he married in Miss (?) to Martha Louisa Maples. Their 1st 2 sons were Jason Lafayette & James Monroe. (b 1843 & 18--). My newest theory is these 2 may have been named Lafayette & Madison for the counties they lived in Miss. I have have just spent 2 days in Austin researching. One thing I found in a book: Masonic Lodges in Miss 1819-1849 by Jeanie Hard Henry has:
Hernado Lodge No 51, Desoto Co. Dispensation 1841; created Feb 1842 consolidated with T C Dockery Lodge No 370 in 1896 retaining name and no. pg 195 1 J M Matlock 1844 I E A P ( entered apprentice) Died 1846 2 Thomas J Matlock 1843 I E AP; 1844 R MBR 1845 suspended Now WHAT J M is this? not mine, as he moved on to Texas-where all the other issues was born. My John M was a Mason and helped to organize lodges in Texas. and Okla. I his grandaus tell us). Somehow Ive not found him on 1850 census and only proof I have he was in Texas is from Masonic Records.
Are you aware of the Matlock Quarterly published by Jess Armstrong $6 a year. A printed index is the greatest-I am sorry I did not make note of 1860 Miss. Census. Mrs. Armstrong probably knows. I wish you luck.. My J M died 1901 San Saba Co. Sincerely Adair Funderbuck.
