Dear Mr. Matlock:

Do you have knowledge of the following line? Rev Pleasant Tackett (son of Lewis Tackett

and Elizabeth Basham of Tenn. and Ky, and Ark.) Rev Pleasant Tackett b Ky. married

Kenzia Frances Bruton b 1812. (married August 1830 Pope Co Ark.) had : 1 James Gray B ?

(Burton) Tackett b 1837, 2 Lewis Lycurgus Tackett b 1840 3. George William Council

Tackett b 1843 md Sarah Elizabeth Matlock (had 8 children) The 8th child was Rosella

Tackett who md Edward Green and was parnets of Mr. William E Green b near Purdy Okla near

Lindsay Okla. 4. Robert Emmet Elias Tackett b 1849 5 Andrew Chester Tackett b 1845, 6 Sarah

Carolina Tackett b 1852 Ark. Perry Anderson Tackett b 1855 Texas. al l born Ark. except

Perry, (in Parker Co Texas)

Mr. Green tells me when he was a very small boy his mother visited in the home of David

Darius Bruton, in Parker Co Tex. He remembers seeing a retarded boy there (Levi "Coalie"

Bruton and was curious about his strange actions, so he remembered the occasions. He

asked his mother who the people were and was told his family related to the Bruton family

My Ancestor David Darius Bruton b 1814 Tenn. wouldn't talk of his family, so we dont know

where he was born in Tenn. or the parents , or if their were brothers and sisters. If

Kezia Frances Tackett (Burton) was related was she a sister or a cousin?

The Brutons thought old David was born in Ill. (because he spoke of Ill the most) so

possibly his family went there awhile before going to Texas, but the 1850 Milam Co Texas.

says he was born in Tenn. (and his three little children were tiny then, so the data had

to be given by him or his wife to the census taker. He was first found in Red River Co.

Texas with a Benjamin Bruton and a Jonas Bruton and Later a Theriya "Cole" Bruton (a Widow)

shows up from Hardeman Co Tenn.

Old David married a Martha Cherry "Patsy" Roberts in ab 1840/43 in red R Co. Tex. (she came

from Ky., Mo, and Pope Co Ar. before Tx.) These went to Milam Co Tex. by 1850 and to Parker

Co abt 1860/9 and later to Jack Co where he died.

Since we had no luck working the Bruton line I have been watching other names possibly related,

such as these Tacketts, Basham families. I find the name of Tackett and Bruton in Grainger Co

Tenn. in early 1797 and again both names in Wayne Co Ky. abt 1800, as well as Basham. But I

haven't located their exact point of contact to know parentage of Kezia yet.

Some of my Tenn. Genealogy magazines show that all 3 of these family names apparently came down

the Valley of Va. (between Augusta Co Va and Washington Co Va. into the Tenn area. in census and

Taz lists but the family data escapes me. In Washington Co Tenn Nancy Matlock married John Van,

March 22 1827, John Matlock married Malinda Ellis April 12 1827 Washington Co Tenn. I found a

William Matlock in Jackson Co Tenn 1802.

If you are aware of any of the names I've listed, I would certainly appreciate any help to solve

my problem.  Sincerely Mrs. J M Hacksma

Dear Mr. Matlock,

I have just been informed that you have a query on the Matlock family. I, too am researching

the Matlock line, I do not have a great deal of information but am willing to share what I

do have. My Descendant is James Matlock and his wife, Betsey Hines. They have three known

children. Martha Elizabeth Abbot, b April 1859 in Harrison Arkansas, Mary Tindle, and Tom

Medlock (he changed the spelling later) who lived in Park Hill Oklahoma. Mary Tindle had a

daughter Rosa Philips, who lived in Black Rock Arkansas at one time. My letter to her was

returned. I am corresponding with three families descended from Tom Matlock-Medlock. One,

elderly man, is Quincie Matlock. He says his father, Jesse and My James were (here I have

gotten two ideas) either cousins or a brother. Jesse had a sister, Lottie (Charlotte) who

married Joseph Abbott, a brother to the husband of Martha Elizabeth Abbott. Quincie states

that Jesse had several brothers, Clinton and Willie that he recalls. He states the Clinton's

girls went to Arkansas to live. Clinton is buried in Cedar County Missouri and I have his

line from there on down (at least portions of it). James Matlock and Betsey Hines were both

born in Tennessee according to the 1880 census on Martha Elizabeth and according to her

death certificate. I cannot find them listed in Carroll County Arkansas or Boone County in

1860 although this would be the date closet to the birth of Martha Elizabeth.

I have been doing quite alot of census work recently and might have additional information

on your line if you give me some idea who you are looking for. I have searched Roane County

1850 census and found several families. However my line wasn't there. I think they would

have been in Arkansas already. Oh yes, my James was supposed to have been killed at the

Battle of Wilson Creek in 1861. His wife died while coming to Missouri from Oklahoma for

the body. Her children were raised by other families. My great-grandmother, Martha Elizabeth

was raised by the Abbotts and married William Center (Pete).I was also glad to have a name of

someone interested in gen. in the Augusta, Arkansas area. have you ever heard of the Rushing

family On the other side of my family, I am searching for Nathan Rushing.  Hope this helps

some. If you will send me more information, Ill check what I have Sincerely Mrs. Robert D

Atkinson.

Dear Sir:

I have read your recent ad in the Genealogical Helper wherein your are seeking Tennessee Matlocks.

I am a descendant of Elizabeth Matlock, born in Tennessee 1785 and died near Oskaloosa, Iowa in

1855. She married Thomas Walker who was my great great great grandfather. I know very little about

Matlocks, but have considerable data on the Walkers, who likewise came from Tennessee. It is only

several years ago that we re-discovered the family of Walker. My Grandfather was Gideon Walker.

When my mother and her sister were only several years old he deserted his wife and children and

never returned. So we were somewhat bitter about this branch of our family. My mother died in 1911

when I was about eight years old. It was only several years ago that my brother and I went out

seeking information on this family and we have met with considerable success and have found some

living relatives who supplied us with more history. You probably are not too much interested in the

Walker data, so will concentrate more on what we know about Elizabeth Matlock. We have a list of

children and some of the later families. If this is of any interest to you, I can send a copy.

Thomas Walker who married Elizabeth Matlock was the son of John Walker and ? Sullivan. Thomas was

one of a large family (don't have names). Apparently Thomas and Elizabeth lived in Roane Co Tennessee.

They had 12 children. John S Walker, my great-great Grandfather, was their second child. He was born

abt 1802 and died 1861. The record says he was born in Roane County, Tenn. The record also says John

S went from Tennessee to Indiana in 1820 probably with his parents. In 1830 census both families were

living in Hendricks Co Indiana. Apparently by 1840 Thomas died. In 1850 Census Elizabeth Matlock Walker

was living in Danville, Hendricks Co Ind. She was 65 years old and born in Tenn. Her son John S Walker

and family had moved to Mahaska Co Iowa in 1846. Apparently following 1850 Elizabeth came to Iowa and

probably lived with her son there, where she died in 1855. She is buried in Old White Cemetery near

Oskaloosa along with members of  her sons family. I have visited the cemetery several times.

The following is my descent from this family:

1 Thomas Walker and Elizabeth Matlock

2 John S Walker and Orpha Jones (had 10 Children)

3 Thomas C Walker and Mary Ann Willson (Willson also were from Tennessee and Henricks Co Ind. and

      came to Iowa about 1847-48)

4 Gideon W Walker and Alice Kisor

5 Mary Emily Walker and Charles F  Ressler

6 Alice F Ressler married Lewis F Winborn

I hope all this will be of interest to you, and if you have additional information on our Matlocks,

I would be most pleased to have. Truly yours... Mrs. Alice Winborn.

Can you identify any of these Matlocks? How are they related to the Lowe's and Russells? What is

the connection with the Lenoir family? I have more on the Russells and the Lowes if either are in

your line. Sincerely Helen C Stoller.

1975 May 31

Dear Mr. Matlock-

I don't know whether to call you cousin of not for you did not tell me what your own line is. as I

stated before, the Matlocks are not my direct line, as far as I know, but they married my aunts and

uncles with a will and so some of them and so some of them are certainly "kin". My lines are Russell

and Low/Lowe. I have no problem with the Russells- at least no in the generation we are speaking of.

A couple of generations earlier there is a problem, but sorting out the Matlocks won't help. I have

some hole that the Matlocks may help with the Lowe's. I had suspected that all those Matlocks who

married into my family were siblings and your records prove this was so. There seems to be a

relationship with the Lenoirs. I had thought that A. Matlock was Avery Lenoir Matlock Sr. I see I am

wrong. The marriage bond is on file in Knox Co Court House. " A Matlock and Margaret J Russell, May

14 1845, by James Balir M.G. Bond signed by W. A. Lenoir" Mrs. Richard Stoller shows the family of

Absalom and Margaret and then draws a chart of the Russells. She states that she " I have very a

picture of the cemetery marker of General Samuel D Warren Lowe (I have never found out what he was a

General of !) and wife Amanda Matlock and also of Isaac Lawson Lowe and wife Malinda Matlock, which

are in old Pleasant Forest Cemetery, Knox Co TN.

Isaac Lawson Lowe         Malinda Matlock Lowe

born May 5 1807           born May 7 1813

died Nov 5 1893           died March 7 1891

S D W Lowe                      Amanda Lowe Wife of S D W Lowe

(Samuel Donald Warren Lowe)     born Jan 4 1822

born Nov 27 1813               died  in Texas Dec 23 1891

died Feb 2 1886

Aged 72 years, 3 mos, 5 days

Isaac Lawson Lowe died Anderson Co TN, Malinda Matlock Lowe born Roane Co TN., died Anderson Co TN.

Their son Ralph Lowe born Oct 15 1846 Concord TN, Attended Ewing and Jefferson College. School

Commission Anderson Co TN. Justice of Peace 1883, Married Jan 30 1867 Sabra L Cross born Anderson

Co TN 1849 daughter of Col William Cross. had issues:

1 William Cross Low born 1870

 2 Joseph H Lowe born 1872

 3 Mary M Lowe born 1875

 4 Samuel C Lowe born 1877

 5 Earnest Lowe born 1878

 6 Jennie C Lowe born 1880

So far I have completely "struck out" in tracing back from Abraham Lowe and wife Mary Martin.

Abraham was said to have been born in Shenandoah Co Va-the son of John and Susannah Lowe. He was

born it is said in Aug 176. I found John and Susannah Lowe at least I found her, a widow living

in Florida. They were from Maryland and were too young to have been Abrahams parents. Abraham

Lowe was already Established at Lowe's Ferry -now Knox County TN by 1792. Served Rev. War. Pvt

in Blount;s Co, enlisted May 10 1779, served 18 months. Apparently he was living in what is now

Tenn. during the Rev War.

I'm returning your SASE-you have send a dimes worth of info and then some! Please write again

and tell me your direct line. Perhaps then I can find something useful for you. I have LOTS and

would be glad to share it... Sincerely Helen  Stoller.

Dear Mr. Matlock,

I was glad to hear form you again and to learn tat you're still searching. I do wish that I had some

real good information to pass to you, but this business-- Research I mean---is slow and delicate.

Some day something interesting may appear. These Matlocks are not easy to trace and my husband says

that for sure none of 'em made wills. We haven't been anywhere this summer to search and all the

while we've been looking for information pretty far back as I had my line to 1811. Now I have a

generation further back, but no dates on the couple except the death date of William Dec 19, 1832

in Canton Miss.

In answer to your question I am sure that I should say "No" I did not see any of the name combinations.

Yet, the single names of James, William, John, Thomas, Charles, Henry were much in use as were the

names Mary, Sarah, and Susan. I did find John Henry, Charles Henry, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Johnson.

I also found Henry Harrison. Have you done any searching for Matlock in Alabama? Some went there, but

I can think of no name now except Charles N. I have a list of Matlocks buried in Stateline of maybe

its state Line Cemetery--No its Edmonston Cemetery on State Line Road, Southhaven, Tenn. who are

descendants of a Joseph Charles who was the son of Charles N- I don't know where this family ties in

or whether it does but I believe that my ancestor had a brother by name of Charles who roamed father

on. Names are often clues. In looking at some of these notes I did find a Luke Matlock listed on a Tax

Record of Sullivan County in 1861. I know that this branch isn't your line, but just that this man may

have been a connection because if the name "Luther". Do you know about this publication on Matlocks,

Medlocks & Matlacks-a quarterly? Its published by a Mrs. W Armstrong, NOTE: rest of the letter was

missing.

Dear Mr. Matlock,

I have your letter of Aug 13, Please and I'm sorry to have delayed my answers so long but I didn't

know what to tell you, so I just laid it aside hoping that I could think of something. I am fairly

certain we are of the same line of Matlock. I had a gr. gr. uncle in Alabama who lived in that part

of Alabama which was formerly in Mississippi. Perhaps your ancestor might show up in Alabama also.

Don't be discouraged for I am certain there is a record of the parents of James Deuntely Matlock

and if you find them the hunt will become much easier as you go back to John Matlock and his wife

Ann, Stepsons and servants came over on the ship Success in 1669. He settled in New Kent County Va.

I think we know most of the Matlocks who were living as late as 1850.

Sincerely Leonard R McGee.

1975 Nov 23

Dear John,

It seems now, I must also apologize for my delay in answering you. So many THINGS  have intruded

themselves into my life during the last few months that I have let correspondence pile up to an

alarming degree. things have not slowed down any and now its time to begin getting ready for

another Christmas! Seems like I Just took last years tree down. Thanksgiving is next week and I

have the family coming to my house--there will be 8 of us. No end in sight. You will recall that

the Matlocks are not in my direct lineage-but an allied family in two lines. I think there may

be a previous connection which may lead me to more information on the family of Abraham Low and

Mary Martin. The marriage Margaret J Russell to Absalom Matlock seems definitely proved by the

1850 Census. The marriage record shows A Matlock and Margaret J Russell. they had a son Avery

Lenoir Russell. I suppose someone later assumed "A" for Avery Lenoir. Where did James Delutley

Matlock live and die? Do you know where he married? It might help to have that info as I try

to help you get him back to Tenn. I presume you have not found a Matlock in Tenn in 1850 that

fits, for you have obliviously checked that already. Some of these families moved about to an

amazing degree, considering the modes of transportation in those days. I cant imagine how they

accomplished it, but apparently they thought nothing of  moving entire households, livestock, &

slaves. Literally hundreds of miles!  Some of them are exceedingly hard to trace. Thanks for the

Martin info. I dont know whether it fits in or not, but I will check it out. I will keep in touch,

but it may be a long time between letters till I catch up... Helen Stoller.
