1973 July 1st

Dear Mr. Matlock:

In my husband's "District Yearbook for Rotary International"

I came across or rather my husband came across your name. Since my family name was

Matlock and we (my husband and I) have been doing research on the "Family" for

sometime, I write this inquiry. My line of the Matlocks settled in Mississippi about

1830 or maybe a little earlier. After the death of my great grandfather in 1847 in

Mississippi, his widow and children moved to Arkansas. I knew their history and a

little farther back than I fist mentioned, but very little. I'm wondering if perhaps

you or a member of these Mississippi Matlocks who came from Tennessee? We have done

much reading in Hernado, De Soto County, Mississippi; and know that in 1842 there

were minors - Charles, James, John, and Thomas -- sons of James and Mary Matlock.

If you are of this family, Im wondering if you have information on the earlier

Matlocks that you would share. I shall be glad to hear. A Stamped envelope is

enclosed. Yours Truly Jane Matlock Treadwell ( Mrs. John W.)

Dear Mr. Matlock

First, an apology for tardiness in acknowledging your letter of July 6 and then a big

"thank-you" for the pages of information sent. My husband and I read with great interest

Dr. Philip Neely's account of his war activities. I would be glad pay for these copies -

I have such a few sheets send in return. Some of it is just repetition about Dr. Phillip

N Matlock. My husband had a researcher in Tennessee trying to learn who the parents of

"my James Madison Matlock" were and she sent him sheets from "Tennessee and Tennesseans"

from which he made the copies I'm enclosing.. Notes in the margins were ones he had put

and his copies as he found additional hits. This searching is quite tedious. We have

researchers on it for three or four years and several times had the services of Certified

Genealogist. Just last June on a trip to Canton, Mississippi, we found the name of my

great-great Matlocks - William and Mary Eliza - and their children. This William died in

Canton in 1832. They had come from Tennessee in 1831 I think. At least he had sold his

land there in 1831 (the family was listed in Franklin County Census of 1830) A son of this

William and Mary, Andrew J went to Jaskonport , Ark. Another son, Charles H went to New

Augusta ( I believe) He was a ???? and served in the Civil War as a Lt. Colonel I believe.

Died in Prison in the North. I had that perhaps, you were a descendant until your letter

came. My husband has many Matlock names in his file and we will be watching for the names

given in your letter. Grandfather was John Dee. The Great Grandfather was ? We are in

contact with a Mrs. Armstrong of Dieball ,Texas, and a Mrs. Wood of Godfrey, Illinois, who

are working on Matlocks. One thing more: Matlocks in America before 1734 as state on p 75

" Sam Davis" Etc. "Vestry Book" St Paul's Parish" Hanover Co., Va, Page 266

" John Matlock and Robert Horsely were appointed overseer of a new precinct by order of

the Vestry 24th September 1711" And " Anne Medlock wife of John Medlock, Sr. died March 23

1699." My husband checked the Vestry Book and found that this is the same family as the one

named on pg 266- Just a different Spelling. This has grown too long I realize. IF we can

help, will be glad to.. Sincerely Jane Matlock Treadwell ( Mrs. John W.)
