Savannah Man Found Dead on Track of Coast Line

Savannah, Ga., September 25-(Special)

Under mysterious circumstances C H Medlock, of this city, who is well known in Macon,

and other cities of the state, was found dead this morning near the sixth mile post

of the Charleston and Savannah division of the Atlanta Coast Line. The right side of

his face and head had been crushed in. The news of the discovery of the body was

telegraphed to Charleston, the division headquarters. In an effort to ascertain the

identity of the body, Savannah was acquainted with the discovery, and after a time it

was found that the body was that of Mr. Medlock. It is not known whether the death was

due to an accident, suicide or murder. Officers are now investigating. Mr. Medlock had

not been seen by members of his family or friends since Thursday night, so far as can

be ascertained. His affairs were in proper shape and nothing of a financial or domestic

character is known to have been working. The body was found with the head upon the outer

rail, the body projecting at right angle from the rail. Mr. Medlock was in the district

messenger and furniture removal and storage business. He had many contracts for removals

on his books. He leaves a widow, his second wife, and five children.

1904 Sept 28 NO SOLUTION OF MYSTERY

Jury Cannot Determine the Cause of Medlock's Death.

Savannah, Ga.,  September 27 (Special)

An inquest was held this morning to determine the cause of the death of C H Medlock,

who was found dead on the tracks of the Atlantic Coast Line railroad, 6 miles from

Savannah, at 11 o'clock Saturday night. The Jury brought in a verdict as follows:

" We the jury, find that C H Medlock came to his death in a manner unknown to this

jury. Further, that there was before us no evidence to show that the death was caused

by foul means. The evidence before us tend to show that the death was caused by Mr.

Medlock being struck by a train at the spot where he was found, which train cannot

be determined by us." The mystery of Mr. Medlock's death therefore, remains unsolved.

Church. Published in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution on 11/1/2005. When Harold

Medlock took an interest in the history of Pinckneyville, which doesn't even

exist anymore, it took over his life and his house. A Tucker High School

biology teacher for 27 years, Mr. Medlock was born and reared in the west Gwinnett

County community of Pinckneyville. As the oldest white village in that part of the

county disappeared under development, Mr. Medlock kept its memory alive with his

meticulous historical knowledge. "It took over," said his daughter Lori Anderson

of Norcross. "We have Gwinnett County histories and census books from the 1820s

all over the house." Being the unofficial historian for Pinckneyville, Peachtree

Corners, Mount Carmel United Methodist Church and its cemetery, not to mention

pioneer Gwinnett families, gave Mr. Medlock great pleasure. "He loved to talk and

to tell stories," Ms. Anderson said. "Everything to him was a narrative." The

funeral for Willis Harold Medlock, 76, of Norcross, who died of complications

from diabetes Saturday at St. Joseph's Hospital, is at 11 a.m. today at Mount

Carmel United Methodist Church. Crowell Brothers Peachtree Chapel Funeral Home is

in charge of arrangements. Mr. Medlock grew up on a farm on Jones Bridge Road. His

childhood friend Lillian Webb, now the mayor of Norcross, would visit him in the

country. "It was just like we were out in Indian territory," she said. Their

friendship endured. "He was just in every sense of the word truly a true friend,

" Mayor Webb said. "He would help you whether he wanted to or not. You could always

depend on him." Mr. Medlock was interested in travel, but he didn't want to travel

himself, Ms. Anderson said. "He amassed a collection of National Geographic’s. We

have them in the house back to 1962, and he's read every one." Biology was Mr.

Medlock's specialty before he delved into history. Though he never taught his own

children in the classroom, he helped them learn using the same methods his students

loved. "He would draw funny pictures of the food chain and how photosynthesis works,

and we would learn from those cartoons," his daughter said. Mr. Medlock, who retired

from teaching in 1983, was a member of one of Gwinnett County's founding families.

Pinckneyville was settled in the early 1800s along the original old Peachtree Road

where several Indian trails converged. The village's crossroads are now the

intersection of South Old Peachtree Road, Medlock Bridge Road and Spalding Drive. The

Pinckneyville name lives on in a community center, a park, a middle school and an arts

center. Medlock Bridge is named for Mr. Medlock's great-uncle, William Oliver Medlock.

His ancestors are buried in Mount Carmel church's cemetery. The church has been active

since 1826, and it's thought that Indians are buried in its cemetery. "He knew just

about every grave in that cemetery," Ms. Anderson said. "I can't think of a question I

asked about that cemetery that he didn't know, and there was always a story attached to

it." Survivors include another daughter, Marianne Thompson of Duluth; a son, John

Medlock of Decatur; and four grandchildren.
