Charlotte said this about the book:
It's very fragile. The handwriting is very good and it appears

it was all done with a quill pen. The book appears to be hand-

made.

July – 15 – 1961

Dear Geneva –
I am Gordon’s aunt & I have often wondered what had become of you & the children

I read in the paper last Saturday about your late husbands death.  If I hadn't

read about that I don’t know if I ever would have heard of you.  It is too bad

that you have to be left a widow again. I am sure you had a hard time raising

your first children, but maybe they can help you now.  Do you work any where?
Geneva I would like to know if you have a ledger that belonged to my grand

father Moore Matlock?
Pg 2
the book was given to brother Will, Gordens father, and I would like very much

to locate it.  It has the birth dates of my grand fathers family & I would like

so much to have that.  In fact I would like to have the book if you don’t care

about keeping it.  The book was written by my grand father with a goose quill

back when they didn't have pens to write with.  I wrote to Margie about this

book & she didn't even answer me.  Do you hear from her?  I am the only one of

my fathers family living & I am 81 years old.  I was the youngest child.  Give

my love to your children & may God bless you & them & help you to live a

concreted life each day (over)

I hope to hear from you when you have time to write  Sincerely

Second Letter
Mr & Mrs David R. Matlock

Postmarked Dec 15 1966

Dear David,

I appreciated your Christmas greeting so much.  It is nice to make contact with

a relative I didn’t know I had.  I also appreciated getting the information you

sent to Floyd Watt from the family Bible.  It was so good to know that the Bible

is still in the family.  I had been trying for years to find dates on Moore Matlock,

my great grandfather.
You stated in the letter to Floyd that the book wasn’t in any condition to be

copied.  I hope you didn’t go to a lot of trouble trying to get it done.  I think

the information will be accepted.  If you would like addition information or dates

I would be glad to furnish you what I have.
I know you don’t know anything about me but I will try to tell you a little about

myself.  My Mother’s Mrs J P Alexander who had written about the Bible was a sister

to your grandfather Matlock.  She was the oldest of eight children.  James Pickel

Matlock was their father.
Mama was the last one of her family living.  She died May 26, 1965.  She Celebrated

her 85th birthday on Jan. 10.  She also lived longer than any of the other children.
I have two brothers, Ralph and Earl.  They both live in Loudon, Tenn, which is about

nine miles from where I live.  I am not married and I live alone I am 48 years old and

I work for a oil company.  Ralph has two Children. A boy & girl.  The girl is married

and their son is in service.  He and his wife both teach school.  Earl was the youngest

one of my family he also has a boy and girl.  Earl works for Mayfields Dairy.  His wife

doesn’t work since they have the children.  She is very interested in the Bible and she

is planning to write to you some time.
I would be glad to hear from you and if you ever come to East Tennessee I hope you

will get in touch with us we are only twenty-five miles from Knoxville.
I hope you and your family will have a very good holiday season.
Sincerely
Reba Alexander

This letter is typed…

Dear David:-
I hope it wont be too great a shock for you to get a letter from a cousin you

likely never heard of.  Your father and I were first cousins.  Your Grandfather

(William Matlock) and my Mother (Julia Matlock) were brother and sister.

For some time I have been assembling information about my Matlock ancestry.

I would like to know the birth dates, and marriage date, of Rebecca Pickell and

Moore Matlock.  If such dates are in your family Bible, I surely will appreciate

it if you will forward to me this information.

I understand the Moore Matlock Family Bible was in the possession of James P.

Matlock, Sr., during his life time; then, it was passed on to his oldest son,

William Matlock (your Grandfather).  No one seems to be sure where it went to

next, perhaps to your Father (Gordon Matlock).  Some one suggested that this Bible

may be in your possession.  If so, would like to have these dates.

If you do not have the Bible, do you know anything about it, who has it, whether

or not it may have been lost in family changes through the years.

The enclosed page will reveal to you that I have been in the Presbyterian ministry

most of my life.  Would surely welcome any information you feel like writing about

your self.  And when you come back to east Tennessee, my wife and I would surely be

glad to have you visit us and spend some time in our home.

Hoping to hear from you soon, I am,

MATLOCK

Mr. W. David Beal of 144 Forest Road, Moorestown, New Jersey 08057 writes:

"While doing research on the Matlock family of Burlington County New Jersey,

I had an opportunity to examine the papers of John Wesley Haines, a sell-

known local genealogist, in the Burlington County, New Jersey Library. I

found a 'Matlack/Matlock' file which included the attached Bible record which

I thought might be of interest to Tennessee families because of the Sevier

connection.”

"Mr. Haines had himself received his copy of the Bible records second hand,

as his note indicates."

An Old Matlock Bible

The following record was copied by Edgar Lee Matlock of Van Buren, Arkansas

from an old Bible bearing the publisher's date of [hard to read, but possibly

1790]. The spelling and the lines drawn across the pages are exactly as in

the Bible, with the exception of the statements contained in parenthesis. This

Bible was originally the property of William Matlock, born in Henry Co.,

Virginia December 3, 1762, or of his wife Catherine (Sevier) Matlock, who was

the sister of the Tennessee Soldier and Statesman, General John Sevier. The

Bible is now in the possession of Rufus Matlock of Van Buren, Arkansas.

This copy of the record was sent by Edgar Lee Matlock to Chalkey Matlock of

Moorestown, NJ, who received it on August 21, 1935.
