British Influence on Wisconsin, 1763-1814

The Massacre at Lake Okoboji & Spirit Lake, pages 271 & 272:

A man by the name of Lott and his stepson killed an Indian, Sintomniduta, and his family.

The brother of this Indian, Inkpaduta, sought revenge. On March 7 & 8 1857, he took his

revenge on a small settlement On Lake Okoboji called Spirit Lakes. Some 12 to 15 warriors

were involved. A few settlers had located there the summer before - Rowland Gardner and

his wife and 3 children, Rowland's son in law Henry Luce and his wife and 2 children-their

double cabin lay the farthest south and they were the first settlers having come there 16

July 1856 from Clear Lake Iowa. A mile north on the east side of the strait connecting East

and West Okobopji lakes lived James H. Mattocks his wife and 5 children with a Mr. Madison

and his 18 year old son. Mr. Mattocks and Mr. Madison were from Delaware County, Iowa.

On the west side of the strait about 100 rods from the Mattocks cabin was a log building

erected by a town site company composed of Messrs. Freeborn, louver, Granger, Sweny, Herriot,

Snyder of Red Wing Minnesota. This building had been erected to help get a lake community

started. The building was occupied by Dr. Herriot, Carl Granger, and bartell A. Snyder. 3

miles further up on the east bank was Joel Howell and his wife and 6 children and his son in

law Alvin Noble with his wife and one child and another son in law named Ryan while with

Noble resided Joseph M. Thatcher and his wife and one child. While 5 miles north on Spirit

Lake Lake lived the only settlers, Mr. William Marble and his family.

The Indians were first at the log building and then on to the Mattocks and the others 34

people in all were killed with the Indians carrying away 4 women & girls. Mattocks cabin

was the only one burned. Inkaputa about the 12th of March retired to Heron Lake.

1931 March 24  Five Volunteer Fireman Killed In Truck Crash

Malvern, PA. (AP) - The sirens of the Malvern volunteer fire department proved to be a summons

to death for five members of the company and injury to 11 others when they responded to a grass

fire alarm yesterday. Word of the tragedy brought death to the 6th man , the father of one of

the victims. He was Perry Matlack, a platinum worker. He fell dead in his home from shock when

told his 17 year old son, Clarence, had been killed.

When the siren sounded 17 men boarded a combination pumper truck and started for the George

J. Camp estate, two miles west of Malvern. When it was speeding along less than a quarter

mile from the fire, something went wrong with the truck as the driver attempted to make a

sharp left turn. It swerved from the road and crashed into a bank and a tree.

Five men were caught between the bank and the truck and crushed to death. One leapt to safety

and the others were hurled in all directions and 3 were injured seriously.
