of age, and his younger brother Charlie, and a little sister, with the assistance of their mother,

1919 Aug 19 Tuesday Evening Published in the Clearfield Progress, Clearfield, PA,
PAYMENT OF $15,000 RANSOM BRINGS FREEDOM TO CAPTIVE ARMY OFFICERS. Bulletin, El

Paso, TX, August 19 - Lt. Paul H. Davis and Lt. Harold G. Peterson set free by

Mexican bandits on payment of $15,000 ransom according to terms laid down by the

bandits / are reported to have crossed the American border at a point near Candelaria

and not far from Marfa, TX. Capt. MATLOCK of the 8th US Cavalry carried the ransom

money to the bandit camp and obtained their release. Capt. Matlock was accompanied

by a small detachment of guards and Vice-President H.M. Fennel of the Marfa, TX

National Bank who had the money, in charge. The aviator's stories of their experiences

since being captured on August 10th is expected to bear out the belief that they were

taken captive on the American side of the border in the Big Bend District by a roving

band of bandits who infest the mountains for cattle and any other loot they can find.

Major General Joseph T. Dickman, commander of the Southern Region of the War Department,

authorized the payment of the ransom and the relief party was immediately dispatched

across the border on their dangerous errand.

Bulletin, San Antonio, TX, August 19 – Official reports to the headquarters of the

Southern Department of the War Department located here said that the full amount of

the $15,000 was paid to the bandits.

Bulletin, Austin, TX, August 19 - Anticipating an early climax in Mexican affairs

Governor Hoby today ordered a speeding up in recruiting to fill up the TX National

Guard to it's full strength of 16,000. Adjutant General Harly has been ordered to

proceed along these lines. The guard consists of 2 brigades of cavalry and one of infantry.

8TH US CAVALRY REPORTED TO BE IN PURSUIT OF MEXICAN BANDITS - SECRETARY OF WAR DECLARES

HE HAS NO CONFIRMATION OF REPORT BUT ADMITS ITS POSSIBILITY - AIRPLANES ASSIST IN THE

SEARCH Bulletin, El Paso, TX, August 19 - The 8th US Cavalry has crossed the border in

pursuit of the bandits who have just released the two army officers after collecting the

$15,000 ransom. The cavalrymen crossed the border just below Candelaria. Army airplanes

are assisting in the search for the trail of the bandits. Washington, D.C., August 19 -

While Secretary of War Baker and other war department officials declared they had received

no confirmation of the report that the 8th Cavalry had crossed the border, it was freely

admitted that Col. Langhorne of the 8th had orders to cross the border in an attempt to

locate the bandits just as soon as the ransom was paid and the men released. The state

department had advised the war department , that it was proper to take such action.

22 August 1919, The Clearfield Progress, Clearfield,PA, Friday Evening

BANDIT HUNT IS STILL ON Marfa, TX, August 22 - Four Mexican bandits have been killed by

the 8th Cavalry which is scouring the mountains of Northern Mexico for trace of the

bandits who carried away Lt.'s Peterson and Davis and held them for ransom. News of the

first serious clash with the bandits was brought here today by Capt. MATLOCK who made the

trip by airplaneHe reported that the men were in the saddle again today and that no nook

or cranny in the mountains would be left unsearched. Every house in the path of the

cavalrymen is being searched and every canyon and ravine is being explored. The cavalrymen

are determined to make a thorough cleanup of the bandit infected bad lands south of the

Big Bend. Capt. MATLOCK after making reports will again join his men using the aerial

route. The battle with the bandits took place in a mountain blockhouse.

Bulletin, Washington, D.C., August 22 – President Wilson and Secretary Lansing conferred

for more than an hour this morning at the White House. It was intimated that the subject

of their discussion was the protest lodged by the Mexican Ambassador against the crossing

of the border by the 8th Cavalry and the request for a withdrawal of troops from Mexican

soil. Photographs identify Lt. Harold George Peterson of Hutchison, Minnesota and Lt. Paul

H. Davis of Strathmore, California
