These three men, John Kerr, Jacob
Morris and William Matlock lived in Charleston
and bought land for
speculation—transactions recorded in Charleston and then
recorded in Pendleton when
courthouse was available. William Matlock (the
watchmaker)

(This census was not taken until the fall of 1791) He
was last listed as a member of the

The Greenville Piedmont, SC -
Tuesday - Aug. 14, 1934,
p.2: Kills Himself Before He Will Uproot Cotton.
Services for
Greenville County
Farmer Who Shot Himself Yesterday
To Be Held Today.
Funeral Services for B. B. Medlock, 48, farmer of lower
Greenville County who
shot
and killed himself yesterday will
be conducted at Columbia
Baptist Church at 4:30
pm the Rev. Ben Davenport
conducting. Mr. Medlock was
said to be worried over having
three
acres of cotton in excess of the quota. Federal men
measured his cotton field recently, ordering him to plow
up the stalks on the
three extra acres.
Coroner George McCoy will not hold an inquest. He was
told by the family that
he had threatened to kill himself. The thought of
plowing up cotton, of which he
had a good
stand was evidently too
much for him, said the coroner.
Mr. Medlock is survived by his wife, Mrs. Maggie
Medlock, the
following daughters:
Frances, Marie, Estell, and Ruby
Medlock, Mrs. J.B. Whitt and Mrs. Marie Chapman
and the following sons: Melvin,
Lude, Vertie, James and Albert Lee Medlock; 2

History of South Carolina pg 19
James Travis Medlock deceased for
many years was ne of the leading bankers of Greenwood.
He was a veteran in banking
experiences, and filled practically every executive
position in a bank. Mr. Medlock was also widely known as
one of the mot prominent Methodist laymen in the state.
He was born in Laurens County, South Carolina, August
18, 1856, son of James Travis and Cornelia (Jones)
Medlock. His father both a farmer and merchant. The son
had a business college education in addition to the
advantages of the common schools and for three years was
a teacher. With the exception his career has been
completely a commercial one. For ten years he was in the
mercantile business, four years in Laurens County and
six years in Greenwood. He began banking with the Bank
of Greenwood, first as assistant cashier for six years
and the six years as cashier. Besides his knowledge of
banking he had been gaining steadily the confidence of
his of his associates and his reputation for financial
management. On leaving the Bank of
Greenwood he organized the Loan and Exchange Bank, and
served as its cashier and later as its president. This
intuition was consolidated with the First National Bank,
becoming the National Loan and Exchange Bank, and Mr.
Medlock was afterward president of the consolidated
institution. He was also president of the Citizens Trust
Company. He owned the handsome bank and office buildings
40x120 feet, a six-story concrete and brick face
fire-proof structure that is a substantial evidence of
Greenwood's
importance as a growing business
center. Mr. Medlock was also active vice president of
the Durst-Andrews Company, wholesale grocers. December
15 1892, he married Miss Kate Bullock, of Greenwood
County. They had a family of seven children: Lucile, a
teacher; Robert Travis who during World war was a
sergeant in the Fifty-third Regiment and saw active with
the Expeditionary Forces in France; Bertha Nell, a
teacher; James Roger, a student in Wofford College;
Joseph Preston, Melvin Kelly and Mary, all at home.
While Mr. Medlock was daily busy with his affairs in
Greenwood he resided on a farm and country estate two
miles out of town. He was trustee and secretary and
treasurer of the Greenwood City School Board. Mr Medlock
was a steward and treasurer of the First Methodist
Episcopal Church of Greenwood, secretary and treasurer
of the Sunday school, and for four years was a member of
the General Board of Missions of the church and was very
prominent in the laymen's missionary movement.
Mary Medlock Thompson, longtime
resident of Greenwood, SC, died on Saturday, May 7,
2005 at the age of 95. Born July
4, 1909, Mrs. Thompson was a daughter of the late
Kate Bullock Medlock and James T.
Medlock. She was a 1930 graduate of Lander University
and taught school briefly in
Lowndesville, SC, before marrying William Gamewell
Thompson. She was active in the Lander Alumni and was
honored with a celebration of her 90th birthday with a
surprise party given by her family at Lander, which was
attended by friends and members of her graduating class.
A stone was placed on the Memory Walk at Lander in her
honor. Mrs. Thompson was a partner in running a family
business, The Washerteria, and was actively involved in
school, church, politics and civic activities. Mrs.
Thompson was a devoted Christian throughout her life.
She loved God, her church, family, friends and her
community. A lifelong member of Main Street United
Methodist Church, Mrs. Thompson served as a Sunday
school teacher in both the adult and children's classes
and was a member of The Upper Room Sunday School Class.
She was very active in the United Methodist Women's
Circle and served as an officer for the District United
Methodist Women, attending many church conferences in
Columbia for the UMW. She was a member of The Iris
Garden Club and loved gardening and growing her roses.
Mrs. Thompson was the last surviving member of her
family of four brothers and three sisters and was also
preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Jo Thompson
Ouzts. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Brooks S.
Stuart of Kiawah, SC and four grandchildren who loved
her dearly, Teresa Stuart Hough of Spartanburg, Ashley
Stuart Lindsey of Erie, CO, Michael Winston Stuart of
Wilmington, NC and Leslie Ouzts; four great
grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May
10th at Main Street United Methodist Church with the
Rev. James D. Dennis, Jr. and Dr. Ted Morton
officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial
Gardens. Pallbearers will be Michael Stuart, Billy
Hough, Dr. Melvin Medlock, Travis Medlock, Perry
Thompson and Brooks S. Stuart.
