CYRUS A. MATLACK A car inspector for the P.R.R., of 1807 Fourth avenue, died at 5:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon after an extended illness. He was born at Duncannon, Perry county, on July 21, 1876, a son of Jacob and Clara (Shirk) Matlack. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Eva (Scott) Matlack; a daughter, Mrs. Alma Kaylor, Bellwood; two sons, Lt. J. S. (Babe) Matlack, United States navy in California; and P/O 2/c J. Harold Matlack, United States Navy in Bremerton, Wash; five grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. D. B. Connors, Altoona; Mrs. John Black, Juniata and Mrs. Sara Cross, Altoona, and two brothers, James, New Millport, and Joseph, Altoona. Mr. Matlack was a Methodist by faith. Friends will be received at the Axe funeral home after 7 o'clock this evening. MATLACK - Funeral services for Cyrus A. Matlack of 1807 Fourth avenue, will be conducted tonight at 7:30 o'clock at the Axe funeral home in charge of Rev. E. Z. Utts. Continued services will be held tomorrow afternoon a 2 o'clock in the Methodist Church at New Millport. Interment in New Millport cemetery. Friends are being received at the Axe funeral home. FRANCIS E. MATLACK, retired, P.O. Warminster, is a grandson of Caleb Matlack, who was a resident of Holmesburg, Philadelphia county, where he died in 1793. His son Abraham,

the father of our subject, was born at Holmesburg, and died in Petersburg, Va., in 1825.

He was a carpenter by trade, and was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and a man of

excellent character. His wife was Elizabeth Elliot, of Philadelphia, who died before her husband, in Richmond, Va. She was buried in an old churchyard, which has since been deeded

to the city of Richmond, and greatly improved and beautified. Their children were: Caroline, Mary Wiley, Caleb, and Francis E., who was born August 27, 1812, in Philadelphia. Being

left an orphan at a very early age, he returned to Philadelphia, where he learned the trade

of shoemaking, at which he worked till 1866, when he bought the farm in Warminster township, which has since been his home. In April, 1837, he was married to Miss Mary Titus whose parents were residents of Bristol. She was born near Doylestown in 1814, and died in July, 1881.

To their union six children were born: Elizabeth, who died in infancy; Mary Elizabeth, unmarried, living with her father; Horace and Francis, both deceased; Caroline, married to Horace G. Phillips, Jr., living on her father’s farm; and Francis second, who died in infancy. Mr. Matlack has always been an industrious, careful man, and is now enjoying the fruits of a life well spent. 9 May 1901 - The coach of D.J. Matlack was struck on the top by a railroad gate as it came

down to stop traffic at the crossing. Horse panicked and nearly cost the death of those on

the wagon.

8 May 1902 - Miss Augusta H. Crane of Rolofs, PA engaged to Howard C. Matlack of Langhorne.

28 Jul 1904 - David J. Matlack died suddenly early Tuesday Morning after only a couple hours illness. He is survived by wife and children: George, William, Howard Matlack and Mrs. Matilda Gruger, Mrs. Pierson S. Fretz, Mrs. Levi P. Haines.

28 Jul 1904 - Prominent Langhorne Citizen Dead - David Matlack, widely known as dean of the iron foundry industry and superintendent of the Champs Shipyard in Philadelphia, died suddenly at his home in Langhorne. He was 72 and born near Broad and Market Streets in Philadelphia. His father helped build the iron foundry of I.P. Morris & Company. Mr. Matlack in his youth was a journeyman for this firm. Champs bought I.P. Morris and Mr. Matlack was retained  as general superintendent. He is survived by three sons and three daughters.

1908 Nov 20 Bucks Gazette Bristol, PA Wind-Up of Criminal Court Doylestown-17 Nov 1908-

William Matlock was brought into court and pleaded guilty to charges of burglary, larceny,

and receiving stolen goods. Last Monday evening the defendant stole a horse from the stable

of Benjamin Wood, at Johnsville, this county. On Wednesday the horse was found in Norristown where Matlock had sold it. He was arrested when he returned to the purchaser to collect his money. Matlock told the court he was born and raised in Chester County but recently had gone from farm to farm, working as a farmhand. He worked at one time for Mr. Benjamin Wood from

whom he stole the horse. Judge Stout sentenced Matlock to three years at Eastern Penitentiary.

29 Jan 1909 - Richard B. Matlack of Haycock Twp., formerly of Chester County, has been

declared insane by the Lunacy Commission. His affliction was caused by sun-stroke.

21 Jan 1908 - Mrs. Richard K. Matlack of Butler had been staying with her a brother Herbert D. Koerner age 24 of Pittsburg. He was found dead on the steps of William Walker's house at 8 o'clock Sunday morning. Beside him was an empty vial of carbolic acid. Koerner was a son of J.T. ISAIAH MATLACK born April 25 1725 Chester Co PA. Isaiah was the son of Joseph and Rebecca Matlack. Isaiah was married at the Old Swedes Church, Wilmington DE. to Mary daughter of Jonathan and Margery Hunter of Edgmont Aug 19 1754. Isaiah died 1794 Chester Co PA. Records indicate that Mary died between May 22 1793 and April 10 1794.

The Green Tree

This tavern was erected in 1786 by Isaiah Matlack, the owner of the farm which included the N.

E. quarter of the town, and his son-in-law Nathan Scholfield, was the first landlord, in 1787. In 1793 Isaiah Matlack conveyed the farm and tavern to his son Jesse Matlack, and the latter, at his death, 1830, devised the same to his son Robert Matlack, subject to considerable mortgaged indebtedness. Robert died in 1834, having appointed Walker Yarnall and Jesse Matlack his executors, with directions to sell the property; but it was seized by the Sheriff Robert Irwin, and conveyed, Nov 5 1835 to Walker Yarnall and David Townsend. The land included 137 acres, of which 20 were in West Goshen.

JONATHAN MATLACK born May 16 1737 PA. Jonathan was the son of Joseph and Rebecca Matlack. Jonathan married 1st ?, 2nd Hannah Waln 24 Apr 1773 in Christ Church, Philadelphia, PA. Jonathan died March 31 1805. Hannah died June 28 1832.

Death Notice At the late residence of her son Caleb Matlack, in West Goshen township,

on Thursday morning the 28th June, Mrs. HANNAH MATLACK, aged 80 years, widow of Jonathan Matlack, who died about 23 years ago. She has left children - grand children and great-

grand-children. Within three days of her death, Mrs. M. was in such health as to walk in

her garden; and indeed had been remarkably well until the unfortunate accident, which

occurred last year, by which she lost her son Caleb, from which time she has sensibly

failed July 4, 1832

The Spread Eagle

Situated at the N W corner of Gay and Walnut streets, was erected by Jonathan Matlack,

about 1803, and James Jackson late of the Bear tavern, was the first to receive license,

1805. The property is believed to have remained in the Matlack family until recent times, having been devised by Jonathan to his son Isaiah R Matlack in 1828.

1828 Jonathan Matlack inherited the homestead in Goshen and continued to live there. The

will of Jonathan Matlack, of West Goshen is dated March 23 1828, of which the following

is a synopsis: To son George S Matlack my plantation, lately purchased from the executors

of William Hayman, partly in Willistown and partly in Edgmont, containing about 234 acres;

also $300 to better enable him to stock it, and twenty shares of stock in Bank of Chester county: To daughter Mary M Matlack my messuage, storehouse and about 29 acres in Easttown,

then shares of bank stock, some household goods, and $1,500 to be paid by son George out

of his land: To Son Isaiah R Matlack my tavern house in West Chester with the land belonging thereto 21 acres in the fork of the Philadelphia and Boot Roads, tanyard and 11 acres, 70 perches in West Goshen, and ten shares of stock in US Bank: To son William P Matlack the homestead in West Goshen, containing 117 acres, 53 perches, a tract adjoining of 50 acres,

89 perches, 28 acres on south side of Philadelphia Road, two lots in West Chester and twenty shares of stock in Bank of Chester county.

1794 October 1 To be Sold by Private Sale.TWO certain tracts or parcels of Land, situate in the township of Goshen, in Chester county, viz. a Plantation, containing about 86 acres, with a good mansion-house, barn, stables, and spring-house, over a never failing spring of water; on the premises are 20 acres of good woodland, and six acres of meadow, the rest good arable land, bounded by lands of John Lockhart and others, within two miles of the seat of justice in said county. For terms, apply to the subscriber, on the premises, John Lockhart, at West Chester, of Benjamin Matlack, innkeeper, at the sign of the Boot. Also a certain tract, being part of, and contiguous to, the lands aforesaid, containing 53 acres, about ten acres of good woodland, and a complete situation for a mansion-house, having a never-failing spring. WILLIAM PENN MATLACK, deceased through a long, useful and active life won the confidence

and respect of his fellow-men, and when his life's labors were ended the community mourned

the loss of one of its valued citizens. He was born on the old Matlack homestead in West

Goshen township, Pennsylvania, October 3, 1805, the son of Jonathan and Sally (Messer)

Matlack. Jonathan Matlack was a man of remarkable industry, energy and enterprise, and

prosecuted his business interests, which consisted chiefly of transactions in real estate

and dealing in stocks, in a manner that brought to him rich returns for his labors. He was

the owner of a large tract of land in West Goshen and a hotel in West Chester, from the

rental of which he realized a goodly income. He married Sally Messer, who was a kind-hearted

woman and beloved by all who had the honor of her acquaintance, and the following named

children were born to them: George M, Richard I, and William Penn Matlack.

William Penn Matlack obtained a liberal education in the schools of his native county, after

which he pursued a course of study to qualify him for admission to the bar of Pennsylvania,

but, abandoning this profession, he turned his attention to agricultural pursuits, which he

continued to follow up to the time of his decease, meeting with that success which invariably attends industry, perseverance and an integrity of character that gains for its possessor the esteem and confidence of his friends. In 1864 Mr. Matlack was joined in marriage to Miss Larrisa D Ladd, who was born in Mississippi, a daughter of Joseph A and Martha (Lagnias) Ladd.

Their children are: Martha Mary, died at the age of nine years; Evangeline, and Ada Peora

Matlack, who died at five months. Mr Matlack died in September 1883, survived by his widow who

resides on the old homestead.

The Green Tree

This tavern was erected in 1786 by Isaiah Matlack, the owner of the farm which included the N.

E. quarter of the town, and his son-in-law Nathan Scholfield, was the first landlord, in 1787. In 1793 Isaiah Matlack conveyed the farm and tavern to his son Jesse Matlack, and the latter, at his death, 1830, devised the same to his son Robert Matlack, subject to considerable mortgaged indebtedness. Robert died in 1834, having appointed Walker Yarnall and Jesse Matlack his executors, with directions to sell the property; but it was seized by the Sheriff Robert Irwin, and conveyed, Nov 5 1835 to Walker Yarnall and David Townsend. The land included 137 acres, of which 20 were in West Goshen.

Obituary DIED, on Friday the 8th inst., at the residence of
Mr. Worrall, in East Bradford, Chester county, WASHINGTON G. MATLACK, aged 37 years, 5 months and 21 days. The deceased left home the day previous to his death to visit Mr. Worrall, where he arrived in excellent and vigorous health. But early next morning he complained of being somewhat unwell, but in little time he became quite convalescent & cheerful, and shortly after started out a small distance into one of the fields. (it is presumed to see the man ploughing,) which he had scarcely got into, when he was observed by the ploughman to fall, who immediately went to him to see what was the matter; finding his situation to be dangerous, he instantly ran to the nearest neighbor to obtain aid, and on returning they found that life was fast waning away; - in a few minutes a physician arrived on the spot; it was thought that a rupture of a blood vessel had taken place; but it was too late -medical aid was in vain - the scene had now changed, in the short space of ten minutes - the pulsation of life had ceased life transient glow had gone - the soul had taken its flight. His remains were interred on Sunday week, followed by a large and respectable concourse of relations and friends to the burial ground,

at Friends Meeting house in Goshen, who are left to mourn his untimely death.

BIOGRAPHY: "ENOCH MATLACK, a farmer of section 32; Logan township, Ida county, was born in Delaware county, Pennsylvania, February 17,1825, a son of Reuben and Orpha (Thomas) Matlack, natives also of that county. The father was a cabinet-maker by trade, later a farmer; in an early day he went to Chester county, Pennsylvania, afterward went South, where he died many years ago. The mother died at Harrisburg' Pennsylvania, in 1856. Mr. Matlack's ancestors were all Quakers, and came to this country with William Penn. They brought over a clock which is

now in the possession of the subject of this sketch, and is still in running order; it bears the name of Mr. Matlack's grandfather across the face. General Scott was a relative of the family. On the father's side the family was of English descent, and settled in Pennsylvania

in the days of William Penn. On the mother's side the family are of Welsh descent. Mr. and

Mrs. Reuben Matlack had eight children, two now living: Enoch and Isaiah Jackson, of Ida County. "Enoch Matlack, the eldest child, was reared and educated in Chester county, Pennsylvania, where he also learned the trade of a tanner, following the same at Hummelstown, that State. He next engaged in the grocery business at Harrisburg two years and then, in 1879, purchased his present farm of 160 Acres in Logan township, Ida county, Iowa. He has since improved his place, erected a good one and a half story residence, 28x32 feet, a fine barn, 48x30 feet, and has all other necessary farm improvements. Mr Matlack's farm is well watered and adapted for stock-raising, in which he is extensively engaged. He takes an active interest in politics, voting first with the Whig party, and has been identified with the Republican party since its organization. "Our subject was first married at Middletown, Pennsylvania, in 1851, to Sophia B. Rife, a native of that State, and a daughter of Jacob and Mary (Bomberger) Rife, natives also of Pennsylvania, and of German descent. To this union was born nine children, five now living: Jacob, married and resides in Logan Township. He and his wife have nine children: Clara V., Walter H., Sophia R., George K., Jennie L., Franklin R., Ralph E., Jacob R., Mary A., and Roscoe E.; Joseph, unmarried, lives in Ida County; Walter, at home; Mary, at home; and Clara, wife of Samuel Long, of York Pennsylvania. Mr Matlack was again married, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1871 to Mrs. Sarah A. Kesler, nee Franer, who was

born in that state. Her death occurred at Harrisburg in 1880. "Mr. Matlack takes an active interest in church work. He has witnessed nearly the full growth of Logan township and has always been one of its honored and respected citizens." Frank Hickman Matlack, Physician, Turtle Creek, was born in East Brandywine, Chester Co PA

on Nov 7 1842, a son of Thomas Matlack, and on a family of six sons and one daughter; four

of the sons studied medicine and followed the profession for a livelihood. His grandfather, George Matlack was an English Quaker who settled near West Chester, on a farm. Thomas Matlack who was born there, and married Eliza McFarland, a native of East Brandywine where he engaged in farming. He was a republican, and served for many years as supervisor of his township. James, one of his sons, was a well known physician of Turtle Creek, now deceased. Frank was reared on the farm , and after leaving the common schools attended the Millersville State Normal School. In April, 1866, he entered the Freedman’s hospital at Macon Ga, and two years later graduated from the Augusta Medical College in that state. After studying and engaging

in the drug business with his brother at Turtle Creek, he entered the University of Pennsylvania, from which he graduated in 1872. He then settled down to practice in Turtle Creek, where he has been successful. He is the owner of a farm in Patton township, a double house at Brinton, and a residence at Turtle Creek. Dr Matlack is a member of the Allegheny County Medical society, and of the U. P. Church. Jan 25 1888, he married Isabella, daughter

of the Lat William Oliver, a coal operator of Mifflin township.

George married Rachel A Garrett Nov 17 1864 Chester Co PA. George was educated at Milton Dunall's Academy, Unionville, and Franklin Taylor's school, West Chester, and was for

some years a schoolmaster. George purchased his father's farm on which he lived during

the remainder of his life. George died at his native place March 9 1893. George can be
