Immigration Rosters of the Elliott Cut-Off: 1853 & 1854,
and Immigration Registration at Umatilla Agency, 1853,
compiled by Leah Collins Menefee, 1984.

PREFACE

Men seeking free land had been coming to Oregon Territory for some years when in 1852 viewers

from Linn, Lane and Benton counties scouted a new cut-off from the Oregon Trail at the Malheur

River west to the Willamette Valley.

In 1853, contracts were let to build the new road which was believed to be over a hundred miles

shorter than the old Oregon Trail. It was known as the Elliott Cut-off, and those who took it

were often referred to as "The Lost Wagon Train of 1853". What happened then has been published

in six issues of the Oregon Historical Quarterly, beginning in December, 1976.

The number in the immigration coming to Oregon in 1853 has been estimated as 8,000 men, women and

children. Of these, about 275 remained on the Oregon Trail. Some 200 wagons left the Oregon Trail

in Idaho and came into the Willamette Valley via the Southern or Applegate route, and 50 wagons

split off to pioneer the first wagon road to Washington Territory

Roster, Lost Wagon Train, 1853

Asterisk marks those who probably were in this party. Children listed are only those brought to

Oregon

1912 December 18 Reno Evening Gazette Young Desperado is Identified as Joe Matlock of Oregon. Santa

Ana, Cal. - Dec 17 - The young desperado who was killed at Turnato Springs yesterday after slaying

one and wounding three of the posse which battled with him, was identified today as Joe Matlock

formerly of Eugene, Oregon.  The identification was made by Dr. L.L. Whitson, a dentist who formerly

lived in the Oregon town. He said that Matlock had been arrested at Eugene three or four years ago

for an attack on a woman and fled after his release on bail. On a torn envelope in the dead man's

pocket was written the name ____? Bowen. Bowen was sheriff at Eugene when Matlock was arrested.

Sheriff _? E. Ruddock of Orange County found a photograph of Matlock which had been sent out by the

Eugene sheriff at the time of Matlock's flight and it bore a strong resemblance to the dead man.

Matlock was a son of J. D. Matlock, a former mayor of Eugene.

Illustrated history of Lane County, Oregon Portland, Or.: A.G. Walling Pg 501

J D MATLOCK: resides in Eugene City; is a merchant; was born in Benton County Tennessee, in

1839; arrived in Dade County Missouri when quite young, and came to state and county in 1863;

was married in Lane County, Oregon in 1862, Elizabeth M Rutledge, was again married in 1869 to

Louisa Rutledge. In 1867 and 1868 Mr Matlock taught school; served two years as superintendent;

in 1874 was elected to the legislature; he introduced the first bill of freight and fares to Oregon.

When the bill came up to establish the State University by the request of members of Lane County,

Mr Matlock asked for a division of the bill so as to extend the time for the completion of the

University and to allow Citizens of county to levy a tax to finish it.

John I. Matlock

The entire life of John I. Matlock has been spent upon the farm, one and a half miles from Holley,

where he was born June 20, 1858. His father, William, who was born in Missouri, contracted the

gold fever in 1849, and as a young man joined a party bound for the mines of California. He was

fairly successful, and with his little hoard came to Oregon in 1851, locating on the farm of three

hundred and twenty acres now occupied by his son. He married Nancy Shields, member of an early family

here, and reared a family of ten children, four sons and six daughters. He naturally suffered from the

depredations of the Indians in the early days, and as naturally joined the defense instituted for the

protection of the life and property of the settlers, serving in the war for several months. His death

occurred in 1875, at the age of forty-nine years, and nine of his children are living at the present

time. These are: Amanda, the wife of Gideon Hodson; Evaline, wife of Timothy Riggs; John I.; A.J., near

Holley; Artilla, the wife of Henry H. Chance; William T.; Mary J., wife of Andrew Shanks; and Eliza P.

When his father died John I. Matlock was seventeen years old, and as the oldest son in the family the

management of the farm fell upon his shoulders. His first wife, Annie (Johnson) Matlock died in 1887,

leaving one child, Minnie, now living in Albany. For a second wife he married, October 12, 1891, Olive

Pendleton, who is the mother of four children: Henry; Ray, deceased; Bryan, deceased; and Vina. Mr.

Matlock still owns one hundred and sixty acres of the original claim, and is engaged in stock-raising

and general farming. He is a member and overseer of the Grange, and is connected with the Christian

Church. source - "Portrait and Biographical Record of the Willamette Valley"

1912 March 2 Salem, Marion Co OR Pioneer Cemetery Data. FAMILY DIES A TRAGIC DEATH

-- Mrs. L. F. Jellison Poisons Four Children and Then Takes Own Life. Notified Police of

Intentions -- Despondency Evidently Cause of Deed. Wrote Pathetic Letters to Friends -- Was

Lately Employed at Royale Cafeteria -- Grieved Over Son Who Ran Away -- Multitudes Throng the

Morgue to View the Dead. As a result of poison administered by Mr. L. F. Jellison to herself

and four children ranging in ages from 3 to 15 years, the five were found dead in a tent at

469 North Liberty street by Officer Sam Burkhart between 10 and 11 o'clock yesterday morning,

who together with Chief Ira Hamilton and C. N. Matlock, made an investigation on the premises

after the chief had received a letter from Mrs. Jellison in the morning mail in which she stated

her intention to end her own life and the lives of her children. Mrs. Jellison was 42 years of

age. Up to a week ago last night she was employed at the Royale cafeteria. The children who died

with her were Espey, a daughter aged 15 years, Harland aged 13, Maud aged 11 and Raymond aged 3.

A coroner's inquest was held at 7:30 o'clock last night at the undertaking establishment of Lehman

& Clough, to whose morgue the bodies were removed. The verdict of the jury was "Death due to poison

suicidal effect." The verdict was signed by the entire jury, which was composed of J. A. Ragan,

J. L Stiver, William Frost, Clyde Rice, L. A. Zimmerman and J. A. Mills.

THOMAS G. MATLOCK. - This well-known citizen of Heppner, Morrow county, Oregon, who

devotes himself to the improvement of our stock of horses, was born in Dade county, Missouri,

March 4, 1849, and came with his parents across the plains to Oregon in 1853, locating with them

near Eugene, where they engaged in stock-raising, and remaining until the death of the father at

Bannack City, Idaho. He was buried on Buena Vista Bar, July 1, 1863. Thomas received a common

-school education, and worked on the farm. His father having been a fancier and producer of fine

horses, our subject went in 1871 to Umatilla county with the intention of continuing in the same

business, and has remained there ever since, developing one of the finest bands of horses and also

one of the neatest herds of stock to be found in the state. There also live his brothers, C.J.,

E.L., W.F. and J.W.  J.D. lives at Eugene, where he is successfully engaged in the mercantile

business. Thomas was married in 1871 to Miss Mary E. Larkin, and has three boys and three girls.

His mother is now seventy-four years of age, and makes her home with her only daughter, Mrs.

Greenwood of the Wallowa. She is a woman still in good health and of unclouded mind. (Page 441.

Cloudburst Kills Over 500 Half of Heppner, Ore Drowned by Flood
People Had No Warning.. Massive Boulders Crushed Stricken City

Portland Ore., June 16 - Following a cloudburst, a wall of water 20 feet high rushed down the gulch

of Willow Creek at dusk Sunday and drowned half of the 1250 inhabitants of Heppner, Ore. The furious

waters carried the residences of Heppner away. So great was the force of the water that boulders

weighing a ton were rolled along the gulch, crushing everything in their path. Wires, bridges and

railroads were swept away and complete reports have not yet been received.

The most trustworthy of the reports say that the loss of life at Heppner will exceed 500.

A report from Ione, 17 miles from Heppner, says that 300 bodies have been recovered. Some of the

business district which is on high ground escaped destruction. The storm covered a wide area but

toward dark it settled to a very heavy rain. The darkness soon made the situation even more appalling.

Dozens of Bodies Found

As soon as the waters subsided, relief was started by the survivors. Bodies were found in the bends

of streams and in some places piled 2 and 3 deep. Up to 2:00 Monday afternoon, 200 bodies had been

recovered in the town.

Many of the buildings not crushed were toppled and removed from their foundations. Hundreds of farm

animals suffered the same fate. The Oregon Railway and Navigation Company immediately started a

relief train as soon as word was received from Portland and The Dalles. Doctors, nurses and supplies

of all kinds are being sent. A relief fund has also been started in Portland.
