Lancaster Eagle Gazette – Lancaster, Ohio

3 Sep 1958 – From an article on the most favored 3 historic houses of Lancaster.

In the rear of the Reese-Peters house is an older house, The Matlack House. It is said to have

been built by Samuel and Elizabeth Matlack of Virginia who came to Lancaster in 1801. John A.

Matlack was a son of Samuel and John was born 5 March 1794. This 1794 John was the great

grandfather of Mrs. Emil O. Tobin of 635 North Columbus Street. Her grandfather was also a John

A. born March 24, 1829 in this house as well as her father, John A., born on April 30, 1859 in

this house. Historians believe the Matlack house was built in early 1801-1804 and is a 1790’s

style home. Rose Ann Matlack, d/o John A. Matlack married Hocking Hunter 30 Nov 1823 and the

marriage took place here. Hockin Hunter was the first white child born in Lancaster. The home

was originally close to the street but was moved back. John S. Brasee purchased the house in

February of 1859 and sold it in 1872 to Phillip Rising. The Risings called the old home the

coachman’s house. In it was a large oven and crane for baking and laundry was done here as well.

The house has a large primitive pine mantel and has great appeal to the collector of Americana.

SAMUEL MATLOCK born 1791-1800 KY. Samuel was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth. Samuel can be

found on the 1820-1830 Fairfield Co OH Census. Samuel died 1838 IN.

SAMUEL MATLACK was born in Kentucky, came to Lancaster with his brother, John and was engaged

with him in business. For a short time George Bentley was his partner. In 1838 he sold his

business to Nicholas Young. He removed to Indiana where he died one year later. (Centennial

JOHN MATLACK born March 5 1794 KY. John was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Matlack. John

1830 MATLACK JOHN Fairfield Co OH 210 Hocking 200011-010011

John Matlack was born in Kentucky and at an early day was engaged as clerk for W & C King. In

1819 He purchased the harness business of Colonel John Noble. His brother, Samuel became his

partner. In 1821 they dissolved partnership, each conducting his business along. In 1833 John

N Little became a partner of Matlack. He died in 1834. (Centennial history of Lancaster, Ohio,

John N Little was the successor of John Matlack. In 1835 Nicholas Young became his partner, but

retired in 1838. In 1852 John Matlack Jr., became his partner and so continued for three years.

The Fort Wayne News - Fort Wayne, Indiana

2 Mar 1896 - Harry Matlack last night killed Mrs. Anna Strong, the wife of the proprietor of

the Cheviot Hotel at Cheviot near Cincinnati. Jealousy the cause

1906  October 26 - Fairbanks Daily Times, Fairbanks,
Alaska: Headline: Wife Sees Husband Stabbed in a Duel -Rivals Over Woman Meet in a Desperate

Battle – After Lover Has Been Trailed for Months and Finally Located in Cincinnati. Cincinnati,

Ohio, Oct 26 - Edward Day, an expert mechanic from Hadenfield New Jersey, was fatally stabbed

this morning by Elmer Pittman, whom Day claims won the affections of his wife, Mrs Gertrude Day,

and induced her to leave her home in New Jersey six months ago and came to Cincinnati. The

stabbing occurred during a desperate struggle between the two men in front of Mrs. Day's home at

109 East Ninth Street. She stood at a window and watched the duel between her husband and his

rival. After the former was taken to the city hospital, she visited him and spent several hours

beside his cot but no one was permitted to hear their conversation. The fight between Day and

Pittman was the climax of a rivalry that began during courtship when Mrs. Day was Gertrude

MATLOCK, one of the prettiest girls of Hadenfield. Both men were suitors for her hand but the

older Day was successful. After they had been married for several years, the wife suddenly

disappeared from home. Day searched for months and a month ago he learned she had come to

Cincinnati. He found her living on Richmond Street and also found his old rival, Elmer Pittman.

The husband caused their arrest but the charge against them was dismissed at Police Court. Mrs

Day moved to Ninth Street and Pittman was often seen going in

and out of the house.
