1874 Jan 15 "The Raleigh News"

In Alexander County, near the Caldwell line, on Christmas day two gentlemen by the names of

Medlock and Bradburn, while under the influence of liquor had a misunderstanding, which led

to blows. Bradburn was knocked down, and while in the act of being stamped, caught Medlock

by the foot and pulled him down. As Medlock fell, Bradburn inflicted a cut with his pocket

knife in the eye of his adversary, which was at first regarded as a slight wound, but in less

than an hour erysipelas set in, from the effects of which Medlock died instantly. The parties

were men of respectability, had been warm personal friends up to the moment of the unfortunate

occurrence, and but for the effects of drink all would be well. Bradburn surrendered himself

to the authorities, and was bound over on the charge of homicide."

It is believed that the two men mentioned in this article were Elijah Medlock and Newton Coleman

Bradburn. The mishap took place in Alexander County, North Carolina. Medlock was married and had

one son. Bradburn was about 16 to 17 years of age; unmarried at the time. If anyone has information

on these two individuals, I would like very much to communicate with them. mobradburn@aol.com

BUNCOMBE COUNTY

JAMES MATLOCK/MEDLOCK possible son of Nicholas Medlock of Granville Co NC.

1791 May 2 James Medlock of Rutherford Co NC sold to Samuel Blackburn of Elbert Co GA 350 acres

on Cedar Creek part of a grant of 400 acres April 19 1790 to said James Matlock.

Also James Matlock to Wm Flannigan of Elbert Co GA, 100 acres on Little Branch including the

plantation to where said Flannigan now lives in Elbert Co, Jan 19 1790. William Flannigan to

Jonathan Arnold 100 acres on Little Beaverdam and Cedar Creeks being part of original grant of

440 acres to James Medlock.

Even though Buncombe County was not created until 1791, one is able to determine that there were

people in the area who were enumerated in the 1790 Census. Most families who were listed in the

following four census companies, two of which were in Rutherford County and two which were in

Burke County. Most of these people certainly were among the first families of Buncombe County.

Two companies, the Thirteenth and Fourteenth, which were enumerated in what was then Rutherford

County, NC, became a part of Buncombe County when it was created in 1791. The thirteenth Company

of Rutherford County generally included the present day eastern half of Henderson County. It

included Cane Creek, Sweeten Creek, Hooper's Creek, Mud Creek, Clear Creek, Wolfpen Creek, Green

River, Hickorynut Creek and the residents who lived south of the Swanannoa River.
