COLFAX COUNTY
NEWSPAPERS:

From
the English language New Mexico
newspaper The Albuquerque
Journal, 21
May 1906, p. 3:
Double Hanging Takes Place in
Raton Friday - Jose Arguello and
John Medlock to Suffer.
Both Men Seem To Be Resigned To Their Fate
Correspondence Morning Journal
Raton, N.M. May 19‹David Arguello and John Medlock, the latter a negro,
will
be hanged in the yard of the
county jail here on Friday
morning, May 25th.
Sheriff Marion Lattrell who will
officiate at the execution has
everything
ready and it is safe to say that
there will be no hitch in the
execution.
Sheriff Littrell has been asked for permission to witness the hanging by a
great many persons, but the list
will be limited to twenty,
including the
doctors and members of the
press.
Both of the condemned men seem resigned to their fate, but they take the
approaching end in very
different manners. Arguello has
written letters to his
family bidding them farewell.
He eats little and is apparently
bearing his
approaching end quietly only by
putting a severe check on his
nerves.
Medlock on the other hand is a hearty eater, sings and dances and is
apparently up to this time
wholly unconcerned at the
approaching end of his
existence. No effort has been
made to secure a commutation for
Medlock, but a
petition has been prepared
asking for life imprisonment for
Arguello. It is
not
believed that it will be
successful.
From the English language New
Mexico newspaper The Albuquerque
Journal, 24
May 1906, p. 5:
Arguello and Medlock Will Hang
Together
Double Execution in Raton Tomorrow Morning.
Governor Hagerman Declines to Interfere for Arguello
Both of Condemned Men Murderers of Women ‹ Story of the Crimes For Which
They
Must Pay
David
Arguello and John Medlock, the
latter a negro, will be hanged
tomorrow
in the yard of the Colfax county
join in Raton tomorrow morning
at (can¹t
read) o¹clock in the presence of
the officers, physicians and
reporters, in
all twenty men being allowed to
be present at the execution.
Sheriff Marion
Littrell of Colfax county will
have charge of the execution
Each man has been the murderer of a woman, and Arguello will hang for the
killing of Francisco Garcia, a
Colfax county deputy, whom he
shot while the
officer was trying to arrest him
for the murder of a woman in
Colorado.
No attempt has been made to save the life of Medlock, the negro, but
friends
of Arguello have spared no
effort to induce Governor
Hagerman to commute the
sentence to life imprisonment.
This the governor has
persistently refused to
do and yesterday there was
received in Raton the governor¹s
final word
declining to do anything to stop
the administering of justice.
Arguello is nervous. He has written many letters and writes constant in
his
cell. He has taken in the last
few days of his life under the
death watch to
reading the Bible and asks for
religious advice and
instruction. He sleeps
little and plainly fears the
approaching end.
Medlock is quiet and apparently indifferent.
The death watch has been maintained since yesterday. Both men have been
carefully searched to prevent
attempt at suicide, and both are
watched night
and day by relays of guards.
There is little likelihood of
any miscarriage of
justice through the fault of the
Colfax county officers.
The
construction of the scaffold was
completed Tuesday. It was set
up in
the rear of the jail yard and
every blow of the hammer could
be heard by the
condemned men. Photographs have
been made of both.
Arguello
Was Twice a Murderer
Living all of his life a quiet and sober man, with even a tendency to
religious enthusiasm, David
Arguello within a year threw the
training of years
to the wind, and committed two
murders, for the latter of which
he will die
tomorrow.
It was on Thursday, July 23, 1905, that Arguello shot and killed Mrs.
Celia
Dassart, a pretty half-breed
woman, who was not yet twenty
years of age. The
murder was done at the woman¹s
home in Bowen, Colorado.
Arguello had lived at
Bowen for some time when the
Dassart family moved there. The
man had been
steady and industrious. He was
married and was considered a
good husband.
Soon after the Dassarts come to
Bowen Arguello began paying
attention to Mrs.
Dassart. She did not return his
open admiration, but repulsed
him steadily. At
length, wearying of his
attentions, she told Mrs.
Arguello of her husband¹s
fickle heart. Early on the day
of the murder Arguello went to
the Dassart
home. Mrs. Dassart refused to
talk to him and sent word to
Mrs. Arguello,
when Arguello returned home his
wife ??? Him with his attentions
to Mrs.
Dassart. It is part of the
story that Mrs. Arguello struck
her husband on the
head with a sugar bowl in the
presence of Mrs. Dassart, who
had come into see
what her instructions for the
control of the erring husband
were carried out.
Angered by the indignity
Arguello secured a pistol and
left the house.
Scarcely had Mrs. Dassart
returned to her home when
Arguello appeared.
Witnesses saw him enter the
house and close the door behind
him. A few minutes
later three shots were heard
from within the house. Arguello
waled from the
house and made his way into the
hills. The Dassart woman was
found lying on
her face a bullet wound through
her back and heart. A posse
started after
Arguello, but he kept up a
running fight with them and
finally made his
escape.
The Second Murder.
A reward of $?00 was offered for Arguello¹s capture and early in October
Francisco Garcia informed
Sheriff Davis of Trinidad that
he believed Arguello
was in hiding hear Raton and
thought he could capture him.
The Colorado
officer deputized Garcia to make
the arrest. Garcia live in
Raton.
On the 19th of October Garcia, who had located, or who thought he had
located Arguello, called at the
Floyd rancy on Johnson Mesa,
near Raton, and
found Arguello there. It is
supposed that Garcia had not
expected to make the
arrest, since he went to the
place unarmed, and it is
believed that he merely
wanted to locate Arguello. They
met and Garcia attempted to
serve his warrant.
A short scuffle followed, when
Arguello shot the deputy through
the heart,
killing him instantly. Half a
dozen men employed about the
ranch immediately
overpowered Arguello and took
him to Raton where he was
jailed.
Arguello had been warned by a friend that Garcia would attempt to arrest
him, and was prepared, for the
coming of the deputy. He was
convicted at the
last term of Colfax county
court.
Medlock Also Murdered Woman.
John Medlock is to hang tomorrow for the murder of a woman named Carrie
Boyd, or McKinney, more than
three years ago in the Gardiner
coal camp. The
Boyd woman was living with a
negro named McKinney when
Medlock won her
somewhat fickle affections. She
went to live with him but after
a short time
left him for another man. A
short time after Medlock
appeared in a saloon in
Gardner, where the woman was
stopping, and without warning
shot her. ³Let her
alone,² the murderer yelled, as
someone attempted to hold up the
dying woman,
³I want to see her drop.²
Then flourishing his pistol he cleared the saloon and a moment later made
his escape in the darkness.
Medlock escaped to Oklahoma, but
he was easily
traced since one of his eyes had
been gouged out. He was located
but before
extradition could be made, he
was arrested for an attempt to
murder a woman in
Indian territory, and was sent
to the Leavenworth government
prison at
Leavenworth, Kas., for a short
term. On his release, he was
arrested by New
Mexico officers and delivered in
Raton. Last July, with other
prisoners,
Medlock made his escape from the
Raton jail. He was caught by
Sheriff
Littrell in Pueblo. He was held
in the Raton jail for more than
a year.
