Nebraska was one of the worst hit communities by
tornados and rain. The entire Catholic church,
monastery, orphanage was
destroyed. Stories of babies and children being blown
out the orphanage and
their bodies found blocks
away. Many homes and
businesses were totaled. Fires started as a result.
It
began about 6 pm on 24 March, 1913.
In Omaha,
Nebraska on 29th Street, Mrs. G.E. Medlock was about to
give birth to her baby when her
home was demolished and her
husband terribly injured. Even all clothing was
stripped from the bodies
of the other family members.
She lay in her roofless
house for hours in torrential rain attended
only by her
injured husband. Finally a motor passed and was flagged
down by the
injured husband.

friend's whose house was still standing But she is in

Gage County Nebraska Biographical 346
William Mahloch has proved himself the possessor of a
large amount of that excellent quality of
manhood
and
self-reliance, which, untied with perseverance and
industry, had enabled him to become
one of the useful
young farmer of Blakely Township, in which he owns a
fine farm of 240 acres on
section 5. When he started
out
in life he was comparatively poor, and what he now owns
had been
obtained by his own manly efforts, he
being
indebted to no man for the help of so much as a penny.
He was born in Sheboygan
County Wis., on the 14th
of December 1852, and is a son of Phillip and
Sophia
(Vest) Mahloch. Who had come to the United Stated
from one of the Rhine Provinces in Germany
after their
marriage. The mother died in 1854 in Wisconsin, but the
father is still living in that
state and has reached the
age of seventy-two years. The parents were Lutherans in
their religious
belief.
Our subject was twenty years old when be began working
for himself, and first hired out as a farm
laborer in
his
native State, then he went to Henry Co Ill., where he worked for two
years, after
which, when he was twenty-three years old,
he came to Nebraska. He was married in the township on
June 28th 1880, to Miss Lizzie Riddle, who
was born in Maryland in 1862. Her father was a German
farmer who had come to the
United States and settled in
Maryland. The mother died in that State,
and the father
afterward married again and came to Nebraska, now making
his home on a farm in
Jefferson
County. Mrs. Mahloch was sixteen
years old when she came with her father to the great
undeveloped
West, and a little later was married here.
Our subject and his wife have had six children in their
family, one whom , named Minnie died when
she was eleven
months old, and the remaining four children bear the
names of Louis, Hannah, Peter
and Carrie; an infant is
unnamed.
Mr. Mahloch purchased his fist land her in 1879,
when he secured
160 acres, after which he added eighty
acres to it
from a adjoining farm, and he now has one of
the
very good farms of this county. The land was wild
and unbroken prairie
when it came into his hands,
and
all of its improvements are due to his own industry, it
being now in a condition to produce
fie
crops of grain.
Our subject also gives considerable attention to the
raising of stock of a superior
grade. He was one of
the
first settlers in this neighborhood, and has been a
resident of the county
since 1875. He and his wife are
highly esteemed
members of the German
Lutheran Church, and rank well
among the best families of the township. Mr. Mahloch
affiliated
with the Republican party in politics,
and is a
first-class, honorable man.

A personal letter from William E. Walton, who
established a trading post at Genoa in 1870, states
he
sold the
business to Stacy Matlock in 1873 and was
appointed to take a census of the Pawnees
and found
there were
2,400 of them. Walton's letter also says Nels
Skooge had worked for him in
his business and when pay
day came,
Skooge supposed he would get all his wages.
Walton, however,
declared, "Any man who worked for me
must live on 90-cent dollars." Skooge disliked the idea
at
first, but by following that practice consistently,
he accumulated
a fortune. In November, 1874,
approximately two thirds
of the Pawnees left for their new reservation in the
Indian
Territory,
and the remainder of the tribe joined them in
1875. The Indians were permitted to stay for
nineteen
years
in their Nebraska reservation, according to the treaty.

The Herd Passes Through the Village
Pawnee, Oklahoma, United States of America
The
ceremony of Painting the Buffalo Skull is held every
spring by the Chaui Band of Pawnee and is
in charge of Mr. Stacy Matlock, a prominent member of that band. The
closing events of the ceremony
are the Buffalo and Lance
dances, which were witnessed by the writer through the
courtesy of Mr.
Matlock, no other white personbeing
present. The ceremony and dances were held in a large
earth lodge,
several miles south of the town of Pawnee. The opening of the lodge was toward the east. At some
distance was a framework, probably that of a sweat
lodge. Only members of the Buffalo Society were
admitted to the painting of the skull, but during the
Buffalo dance the skull painted a few days
previously,
lay on a folded blanket in front of the "altar" which
was opposite the entrance. This
occasion and the Lance dance held a few days later
afforded exceptional opportunities to listen to
Pawnee
songs, but the
semidarkness of the lodge and the solemnity of the
occasion precluded the
taking of notes upon either the
music or
the details of the ceremonial dances.

SIOUX AND PAWNEES SIGN PEACE TREATY
___________________
Western Indians Make Terms of Their Own Accord After
Centuries
___________________
Trenton, Nebraska, Sept. 6 - The Sioux Indians of South
Dakota, and the Pawnee tribe of Oklahoma,
signed a
peace
treaty here last week which settled a warfare
which has existed between them for
centuries and
centuries.
For the first time in the traditions of the
tribes they are at peace with
each other. The peace
council was held in
Massacre Canyon, where, in 1873, the
two tribes fought a
great battle which ended in the
almost annihilation of
the Pawnees, and made them
wanderers until
they settled on a reservation in
Oklahoma, where they have since
lived.
The meeting of the two tribes was not a staged affair
worked up by white men. It was arranged by
the Indians
themselves. More than 100 prominent Pawnees came up from
Oklahoma and as many Sioux
came down from
South Dakota.
Some of the representatives of both tribes were
survivors of the
great battle.
Chiefs Bring Women A Long
___________
Leading the Pawnees at the peace meeting were Walking
Sun, Ruling His Son, Leading Fox, John Haymound,
STACY MEDLOCK, Julius Caesar, Riding In, and St. Elmo Jim. For
the Sioux, there were Frank Goings,
White
Eyes, Long
Dog, Flys Above, and Spotted Weasel. Added to the Sioux
delegation and showing that
the feminist
movement is
gaining, even among the Indians, were Mrs. Frank Goings
and Mrs. Weasel.
In an earlier day the Pawnees occupied central Nebraska
and the Sioux were north in the Dakotas.
The Sioux were
the "cut-throats" of the Indians. They were always at
war with every other tribe.
On the other hand, the Pawnees were peaceful but they
were the best fighters on the plains whenever
they went
to war.
Incidentally, the Pawnees were the enigma
of naturalists. Their language, habits
and homes
differed from those of all
other Indians in the
Americas.
Pawnees Last To Smoke Peace Pipe
_______________
In 1873, the Pawnees went on their annual buffalo hunt.
The Sioux came down and ambushed them and
almost wiped
them off the face of the earth. After the massacre,
the few remaining Pawnees fled
southward, absolutely
deserting
the country in which they had lived for so
many centuries. When
Coronado came up from Mexico in
1541, he found
Pawnees living in well built houses and
towns along
the Platte and Loop rivers. The government
placed the remnant
of their tribe on a reservation in
Oklahoma.
Though other tribes signed peace treaties years ago, the
Pawnee steadily refused to make peace
with their ancient
enemies until last week. At the meeting here they
admitted that the smoking
of the
peace pipe with the
Sioux was a
difficult thing for them after the massacre
in which many
of their
tribe were killed.
Boy, 8, Hid Under Meat Pile
_________
Riding In told of the manner in which he had escaped the
massacre. He was then a boy of eight. He said
he had
hidden
under a pile of buffalo meat until after
the Sioux had departed, when he crawled out,
caught a
stray pony and followed
the remnant of the tribe 250
miles before overtaking them.
Ruling His Son told the peace meeting he had fought in
the battle and that his wife and 2 children
were killed
in the battle.
He is 105 years old now. He had never
taken another wife. He said he had
always been very
bitter against the Sioux but
he was now ready to make
peace with them. He formally
shook hands with Chief
Flies Above of the Sioux.
The final act of the peace making ceremony was a
ceremonial pow-wow dinner to which the Sioux invited
the
Pawnees.
Ordinarily this dinner would consist of
beef ribs roasted over coals but this time
potatoes and
bread and other foods were
added.
Oil Makes Pawnees Rich
_________
When the few remaining Pawnees fled south, they were as
poor as church mice. The Sioux on their
return trip to
their own country were loaded down with the property
captured from the Pawnees.
That which could not be
carried
was burned. When the Pawnee reached Oklahoma they were
paupers.
