Lexington
James Matlock was
born September 4th 1859
DeWitt county, six miles
south
of Leroy. He was the
son of Mr. and Mrs.
James Matlock, and
remained at home
and worked on his
father's farm until he
was nineteen years of
age; he the went to
work on a farm for
himself, but from
childhood he was
afflicted with
rheumatism and
it grew on him so
that in 1890 he gave up
work and began traveling
and sought
every relief
procurable. He spent
1891 and 1892 at Hot
Springs Ark., but failed
to
receive any benefit
and in '94' went to
Hunter Springs Ind. and
then spent the
following winter in
Chicago. Since that time
he has been at the home
of his sister,
Mrs. James Martin,
south of Lexington,
until June 4 1900, and
there that everything
that loving hands
could do to allay his
suffering was done, he
the went to the
Osteopathic Institute
in Kirksville Mo. as a
last relief. He was
thought to be
improving but a
change came over him,
and he passed away
Wednesday, August 15.
He was a man of
upright character and
very industrious and
honest in his dealings
and his nature was
one to attract and hold
friendship.
He leaves besides an
aged mother, three
brothers and four
sisters, a father and
two
sisters having passed
on before.
The Funeral was held
at his old home south of
Leroy last Friday and
was conducted
by Rev. Clark of the
M. E. Church. The
remains were interred in
the Rucker Chapel
Cemetery.

MRS MATTOX
Bates County,
Missouri History 1821-1900 Chapter: In West Point Township Related
by Mrs. E.M. Clark
My father, W. Lemar,
moved to this county in the spring of 1853, when I was 13 years old,
and bought the place
where he now lives, 2 and 1/2 miles south of Amsterdam. When we moved
here there were but
few houses in the country: Mr. Jackson who lived where L.F. Parrish now
lives, Logan Mitchell
4 and 1/2 miles south of Amsterdam, Mr. Adair one mile south of
Mulberry, Mr. Arnott
where Robert Braden now lives, John Green on what is now the Walley Farm.
Mr. Green's house
burned and he lost 2 children to the flames.
I was married in the
spring of 1858 to J. J. Clark. We moved to the place where I now live,
1 1/2 miles NW of
Amsterdam. Mr. Clark was a Democrat, never the less a Union man and believed
in each man voting his
own sentiments.
The fall that Lincoln
was elected, 2 gentlemen by the name of Pope, and very intimate friends
of Mr. Clark, were
visiting us. Mr. Clark persuaded them to go to the polls and vote. They
voted
for Lincoln which was against Mr. Clark's sentiments but it made no difference
to him while
others thought it to
be a great fault. MRS. MATTOX, living just across the state line, frequently
told the Federal Troops that my husband was a rebel and harbored bushwhackers. Tis cause us a
great deal of trouble
with the Union Troops, a company of which were stationed at Trading Post,
Kansas. One winter soldiers from this company called upon us very often but we
never found out
what they wanted until in the spring, when 6 men came one Sunday
morning. They had always wanted
a meal, but on this
occasion they simply chatted and smoked their pipes. One of the men inquired
if
we cared to know their business, we told them we did. They told us that Mrs.
Mattox had told
them we were rebels and kept bushwhackers under our roof. They
had been watching us and found
the statement untrue.
We were annoyed so much by bushwhackers that we were compelled to move
across
the state line into Kansas for 2 years.
In the spring of 1858
a band of bushwhackers crossed into Kansas and killed a Mr. Dedo and another
man, whose
name I do not recall. Mrs. Mattox told the Jayhawkers that the raid was caused
by my
husband while he at the time was sick in bed. The next day 2 men rode up
to our house, came to
the door and snapped their pistols at him but the guns
failed to go off. They then started to take
him out, but strengthened by fright,
I compelled them to leave. At another time bushwhackers carried
my husband away
but he was released and came home the next day.
In 1858 Hamilton and
his followers murdered some men near the Trading Post: Metlark and Driffey from
this county were implicated in the affair. Driffey was caught and hanged in
Mound City, Kansas. Metlark escaped in to Platt County, Kansas but was caught by
Hargrove and a small band
of men. They brought
him home and hanged him.

CHARLES BALLARD MATLOCK
born Feb 1846 IL. Charles was the son of Thomas and Nancy
Matlock and
can be found on the 1850 Adam Co IL and the 1860-1870 and the 1900 Clark
Co MO
Census. Charles married Cora Campbell Feb 27 1872 Clark Co MO.
Hiram Hiller became clerk of Clark County
Circuit Court in 1865 and a partner in the law
firm of Matlock and Hiller. In 1867 he was
commissioned a 1st lieutenant and quartermaster
in the 7th Battalion of the Missouri State
Militia. John Stafford, Amelia Hiller's husband,
became tax collector and sheriff of Clark
County, while Harriet's son William A. Spruance
was deputy. John, William, and Royal Hiller
were all businessmen in the county.
Col. Hiram Hiller was especially prudent in his investments and
land speculations. He was instrumental in getting the Clark County
seat moved to Kahoka in 1870 by providing, along with other members of Hiller and Company (John Hiller, Charles
Matlock, John Stafford, and John Schee) the means to build a courthouse in Kahoka as a
permanent seat of county government. This, of course, secured a measure of prosperity for
the town and, incidentally, its principal landowners.

Elias
MATLOCK, one of the oldest and best citizens of our county, is no more. On
Wednesday,
Dec. 17th,
1891 he closed a long and useful life and has gone to "that
bourn from whence no
traveler returns." He was born in
Washington county, KY.,
Dec 15, 1807 and came to this
county with an uncle when but nine years old. He
settled the place on the Meramec four miles
east of Steelville in 1829, and has lived there for 62
years. He has been married three times.
His first wife was Mrs. Mary Reed, who bore him six
children, of whom three are now living:
Mrs. Constance Crow, of Boon Township, Mrs. Joanna
Reeves, of Liberty Township and George W.
Matlock, of this city, she died in
1852. His second wife was Miss Aley Francis, who bore him
four children, of whom, but one, Mrs. Elizabeth Stough,
is living. His third wife, who survives
him, was Mrs. Cicely Halbert. The
deceased has been in poor health and a great sufferer for a
number of years,
but his last fatal illness was of but about six weeks duration. He had the
most eminent medical skill, the famed Dr. Mudd, of
St. Louis, among the number, but skill was
unavailing, and at
the ripe age of 84 years and one day, he died. Mr. Matlock was a man of
unusual intelligence, upright in all his dealings, a
good neighbor, a useful citizen, a kind
husband and father, and an honest
man. He had a remarkable memory of events in the early
settlement of our
country, and was a very interesting conversationalist in politics he was a
staunch Democrat, consistent and unswerving to his party. He was successful
in business affairs,
and in addition to his one farm, was a large
stock-holder in the Farmers Joint Stock Company
of this place, besides other interests. The funeral
services were held on Friday, at the family
residence and many citizens from
different parts of the county attended and testified their
respect for the
good old man who has gone from among us, and whose venerable form will greet
us never again.
BARBARA MATLOCK born 1796 MD/TN. Barbara
was the widow of James Ransom Matlock and can be

George W
Matlock, business manager of the Farmers’ Joint Stock Company was born in
Crawford
County in 1845. He received a common-school education, and
remained on the farm until twenty-
five years of age, when he was employed as a clerk in
Cuba. In 1876 he was elected to his
present position of business manager of the Farmers’
Joint Stock Company, and in 1882 was made
secretary and treasure of the
same, holding the latter position from 1876 to 1880 also. He had
be president and a director of the bank of Steelville
since its organization, and is director
of the Roller Mill Company. In 1871 Mr. Matlock married
Jennie Halbert a native of
South
Carolina, by who he has one son, Clarence. Politically a
Democrat and a member of the Masonic
fraternity, Mr. Matlock is one of the
most enterprising men of Steelville, and has been very
successful in a
financial way. He is the son of Elias Matlock one of the oldest living
settlers
in Crawford County, whose parents were Robert and Mary
(Carpenter) Matlock, residents of Kentucky
until about the year 1818, when
settled in Crawford County, Mo., and engaged in farming. Both
lived to a
good old age, and their four children, Elias was the eldest. The latter was
born in
Washington
Co
KY in 1807, and at age of nine years came to
Missouri with his grandfather Isom
Matlock. Elias married
Mary
Reeves, who was born in Washington
County
Ky., in 1811 and died
in 1852. Mr. Matlock next married
Allie Francic, and after her death, Miss Cicily A Halbert
became his wife.
Mr. Matlock owns six or seven hundred acres of land, all of which is just
reward
of his industry. In politics he has been a life long Democrat, having
cast his first presidential
vote for Jackson.
In 1876 he was elected treasurer of the county, and in 1878 was re-elected,
discharging his official duties in a creditable and satisfactory manner. (History
