STATE OF KENTUCKY CALDWELL
COUNTY Be it remembered that on
this day of June in the
year of 1849,LUCY MATLOCK, a
resident citizen of said county
personally appeared
Before me, Francis W. Urey (?)
one of the justices of the
County Court in and for
said County, and being by me
duly sworn according to law,
doth on her oath declare,
that she was married to
ZACHARIAH MATLOCK on the 7th day
of December 1780, in Louisa
County, state of Virginia, by
Parson Douglas; that she
remained the wife of said
MATLOCK as long as he lived;
that said ZACHARIAH died in said
county of Caldwell on
the 28th day of Feburary,1827
and that she remained a widow
ever since. That she was
born on the 18th day of July
1759 in Louisa County, Virginia
and that in the year 1777
or 1778 the said ZACHARIAH
entered the regular service in
the Revolutionary War and
served for eighteen months as
well as she recollects; that he
enlisted in Virginia State
Line and served under Captain
B_______, Major Kellis and
Colonel Richardson to the best
of her recollection; that he was
at the battle of Brandywine and
had the smallpox at
Dumpries; and at the end of his
service was regularly
discharged, which discharge he
kept
a long time, but it is now lost.
She may be a little mistaken as
to the manner of his
entering the service, it may be
that he was enlisted as an
eighteen-months man, as it was
then called, and he may have
served in Colonel Karr's
regiment instead of Richardson's
as
to this she cannot be positive;
that one Charles Hardy served in
the same company with
said ZACHARIAH and drew pension
for it and she thinks her
husband's testimony was taken
to prove his service. That after
the said ZACHARIAH's regular
service was over, he was
in much active service with the
milita of Virginia under Captain
William Harris, but she
cannot remember the particular
nature of the service nor how
long. He was a commissary
awhile and had some subordinate
office as will appear by the
annexed receipt, the only
relict she has of three times.
That she and her husband moved
out to this county at an
early period, and she knows of
no person living who can prove
her husband's service.
Sarah Porter of Christian
County, if living, can prove her
marriage with said ZACHARIAH
and may remember something of
his service. That she has a
family record of her age in
an ancient Bible, with the ages
of all her family; that she is
now very old and needs
the benefit of the Act of
Congress, but her husband in his
lifetime would not apply under
the Act of Congress, but her
husband in his lifetime would
not apply under the Act of 1818,
because he would not take an
insolvent oath, and he did not
live to receive it under the
Act of 1832. That she makes
this declaration in order to
obtain the benefit of the Act
of
Congress, passed July 4, 1836,
on the day and year above
written before me.

J. M. HOWARD was born January 2,
1834, and is the second of eight
children born to Franklin
and Martha E. Howard. His
grandparents were very early
settlers of this region, and
lived
to a very old age. Mr. Howard
was reared a farmer and has been
successful through life. He
and his wife are members of the
Baptist Church. He is a present
chairman of the board of
trustees in his school
district. Mr. Howard enlisted
in the Third Kentucky Regiment,
Confederate States Army, in
July, 1861, and served until
March, 1864. Among some of the
battles in which he took part,
were Shiloh, where he was
wounded in the left arm, and
Corinth.
He was married December 22,
1857, to Louisa J. Matlock,
daughter of Rev. Thomas W.
Matlock,
one of the prominent ministers
of this section. She was born
April 13, 1842. This union has
been blessed with seven
children: Alexis B., Maxius O.,
Fannie B., Maud E., Hubert G.,
Mabel V.
and Chester M.,all of
whom are living.
Thomas W. Matlock was born,
about the year 1807. He
united with Harmony church,
in Caldwell
county, in January, 1840,
and was baptized by John W.
Kelley. In October, 1847, he
was
licensed to preach. He
exercised as a licensed
preacher, with good success,
during several
years. Having been the
principal instrument in
gathering Blue Spring
church, in Caldwell
county, he was ordained to
its pastoral care, by J. F.
White and J. W. Mansfield,
in December,
1852. To this church he
ministered successfully,
several years. Subsequently,
he was called
to the care of Princeton,
Harmony and Liberty
churches. But, in the midst
of his useful and
highly appreciated labors,
his brief ministry was
suddenly terminated. He died
from a stroke
on his forehead, by which
his skull was fractured,
February 16, 1866. As the
mortal wound was
inflicted while he was
alone, in his horse lot,
after dark, it could not be
ascertained
whether it was done by the
hand of an enemy, or the
kick of a mule. (Kentucky

NEWSPAPERS:
Indictments In Auto Crash
Circuit Court Clerk Carroll
Morrow this afternoon issued
bench warrants for the
arrest of Clifford Hudgeons,
Dawson Springs, and Charlie
Smith, Earlinton,
recently held by the county
court on charges of murder, and
officers were
expected to bring them to
Madisonville this afternoon.
Hudgeons was indicted on three
counts for manslaughter in
connection with the deaths of
Dorothy Littlepage, Eudell
Medlock and Lyman Dunlap
following a headon automobile
collision near Dawson Springs
the last of March.
Another indictment charges him
with maintaining a "disorderly"
house. Hudgeons,
himself in the Madisonville
hospital several weeks
recovering from injuries
received in the wreck, waived
examination before County Judge
Charles E Barnett,
who held court in the hospital
the day Hudgeons was dismissed,
and was held in
$2,500 bail to await grand jury
action.
Smith was indicted for murder
for shooting to death Whit
Ashby, his neighbor,
during renewal of an argument
over a drainage ditch between
their properties.
He has been at liberty in $2,500
bail. (THE DAILY MESSENGER,
