NEWSPAPERS:

Burlington Weekly Hawkeye, Burlington, Iowa

23 Sep 1857 - St. Louis Intelligencer - Lumberyard of Wright and Maddox destroyed by fire

26 Jul 1862 - Arrival of A Memphis Error - Ren. Mr. Watson, of the M. E. Church, late editor of

the Memphis Christian Advocate, came voluntarily before Gen Steele and reported his situation.

He stood up for the Union and has a large negro plantation 10 miles south of Augusta. The southern

people had burned his cottage and Matlock had made threats of hanging him if he did not leave the

country.

Published in the Burlington Weekly Hawkeye, Burlington, Iowa - 19 July 1862.

GENERAL CURTIS ARMY AT HELENA(Special to the St. Louis Democrat.)

Helena, Ark., July 12 -- The advance of General Curtis Army under Gen Washburne reached here

at 9:00am today having left Clarendon on the White River yesterday at 6:00 am, having made a

forced march of 65 miles in a day and night.

Ass't Quartermaster Winslow will start for Memphis immediately to hurry down supplies.

General Curtis left Batesville on the 24th ult. with 20 days rations and after a halt of 5 days

at Jacksonsport to concentrate the forces in his outposts took up the line of march. His entire

command is now in route for this point. From 800 to 1200 rebels under the command of Matlock

were in the front who fired on the forage trains from Canebreaks and barricaded all the roads

south with felled trees. We overcame all obstacles and the army is now safe.

We had a number of skirmishes along the way but the rebels were whipped in each with considerable

loss to the rebels but with few casualties to our troops.

***Major General T.C. Hindman CSA, had published to the people of Arkansas on June 24 from Little

Rock, asking the populace to help stop Yankee  Gen. Curtis from escaping to the south where he

hoped to get supplies from the Mississippi by boats. Hindman gave instructions on actions to take

as this was not a secret strategy - join the first company you see and attack and kill both day and night

Burlington Hawkeye, Burlington, Iowa

25 June 1874 - Choked to Death - Cass Mattlock, the Rock Creek Murderer, was hung today in the

presence of 2000 people, mostly coloreds. He protested his innocence until the last.

Daily Iowa State Press, Iowa City, Iowa

25 Apr 1903 - Professor Henry W. Matlack, Director of the Iowa School of Music Conservatory at

Grinnell and organist for the Plymouth Church at Des Moines.

Enoch Matlack, a farmer of section 32, Logan township, Ida county, was born in Delaware

County, Pennsylvania, February 17, 1825, a son of Reuben and Orpha (Thomas) Matlack,

natives also of that county.  The father was a cabinet-maker by trade, later a farmer;

in an early day he went to Chester county, Pennsylvania, afterward went South, where he

died many years ago.  The mother died at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1856.  Mr. Matlack’s

ancestors were all Quakers, and came to this country with William Penn.  They brought

over a clock which is now in the possession of the subject of this sketch, and is still in

running order; it bears the name of Mr. Matlack’s grandfather across the face.  General Scott

was a relative of the family.  On the father’s side the family was of English descent and

settled in Pennsylvania in the days of William Penn.  On the mother’s side the family are

of Welsh descent.  Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Matlack had eight children, two now living: Enoch and

Isaiah Jackson, of Ida County.

Enoch Matlack, the eldest child was reared and educated in Chester county, Pennsylvania,

where he also learned the trade of a tanner, following the same at Hummelstown, that State.

He was next engaged in the grocery business at Harrisburg two years, and then, in 1879,

purchased his present farm of 160 acres in Logan township, Ida County, Iowa.  He has since

improved his place, erected a good one and a half story residence, 28 x 32 feet, a fine barn,

48 x 30 feet, and has all other necessary farm improvements.  Mr. Matlack’s farm is well

watered and adapted for stock-raising, in which he is extensively engaged.  He takes an active

interest in politics, voting first with the Whig party and has been identified with the

Republican party since its organization.

Our subject was first married at Middletown, Pennsylvania, in 1851, to Sophia B. Rife, a native

of that State, and a daughter of Jacob and Mary (Bombarger) Rife, natives also of Pennsylvania,

and of German descent.  To this union was born nine children, five now living: Jacob, married and

resides in Logan township.  He and his wife, Mary, have nine children:  Clara V., Walter H.,

Sophia R., George K., Jennie L., Franklin R., Ralph E., Jacob R., Mary A. and Roscoe E.; Joseph,

unmarried lives in Ida county; Walter, at home; Mary, at home; and Clara, wife of Samuel Long of

York, Pennsylvania.  Mr. Matlack was again married, at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1871, to Mrs.

Sarah A. Kesler, nee Franer, who was born in that State. Her death occurred at Harrisburg in 1880.

Mr. Matlack takes an active interest in church work.  He has witnessed nearly the full growth of

Logan township, and has always been one of its honored and respected citizens.

Mrs. Rose Green.

It was with sadness that the friends of Mrs. Rose Hamlin Green, wife of James Green, learned

of her death which occurred here last Friday. Mrs. Green had been afflicted for more than a

year with tuberculosis. On consulting a specialist last October, she was advised to take to

her bed, which she did and continued for about a month, after which time she was up and down,

according to the way she felt until about three weeks ago when she took to her bed and remained

there until her death. It is sad that so young a woman should be called from this world. Rose

Leoti Hamlin was born in Harrisburg Township, Van Buren County, Iowa, Nov. 28, 1888. In 1907

she moved with her parents to Bonaparte, where she lived until August 5, 1908. She then was

married to James Green, since which time she has lived in Farmington where she died Feb.17,

1911, aged 22 years, 2 months and 19 days. She was the mother of one daughter, born in 1909,

who died at the age of seven months. She made many friends during her short residence here who

regret very much to see their friend taken away in her young womanhood. She was preceded [sic]

to the better world by father, mother, one brother and one sister. She leaves to mourn their

loss, her husband, three brothers Frank, Fred and John, and two sisters, Mrs. Chas. Matlock and

Miss Laura Hamlin, besides other relatives and a host of friends. – News-Republican. Source:

A Sad Event—A Lady found dead in her Room (1866 Nov 21 Davenport Daily Gazette)

About eight months ago the telegraph office in this city was placed under the

charge of Mr. Harry H. Matlock, man, who, in addition to'' being one of the best

operators ever stationed in our city, has by his close attention to business and

uniform courtesy won the esteem of all who has made his acquaintance. Mr. Matlock

brought to Davenport with him a lady to whom he was married two years ago at South

Bend Indiana, his former home, and who soon became known here to a small but

appreciative- circle of friends as possessed of remarkable amiability and excellence

of character. Thus the young and happy couple, respected and admired by all who knew

them, were until yesterday afternoon in the full enjoyment of each other's love and

of the good wishes and favor of their fellow citizens. After the house hunting and

boarding to which all new comers to our city are for a while doomed, Mr. and Mrs

Matlock secured very pleasant rooms over the store of Mr J. Weaver, on Fourth street

near Iowa, and there for two months, up to yesterday, they enjoyed the pleasures of home

keeping house for themselves. A young lady, Miss Maria Holcomb, an intimate friend of

Mrs. Matlock boarded with Mr. and Mrs. M. Yesterday afternoon, shortly after one o'clock

Miss Holcomb returned to her boarding place after several hours absence and on entering

the room found Mrs. Matlock sitting upon the floor with an arm resting upon the end of a

lounge and her head thrown back in an unnatural manner. Failing to receive any response

to her alarmed appeal to Mrs. M., in inquiries to the cause of her seeming sickness, Miss

Holcomb excitedly called Mr. Weaver and together they lifted Mrs. M. upon the lounge while

the neighbor hastened in Dr. Baker and Worley were sent for. Meanwhile a message was

dispatched to Mr. Mattock, at his office, and the affected husband reached his home only

to learn that his wife was dying and could not be seen. Soon he learned the sad truth—his

wife had died of disease of the heart. The terrible intelligence was too much for nature

to bear and Mr. Matlock reeled under the blow and fainted in the arms of his friends.

Coroner Tomson soon after held an inquest on the body, and from the evidence adduced, it

was ascertained that although the deceased had been for some time in the enjoyment of

apparent good health, and for several weeks had been unusually well, yet she had frequently

complained of "sinking spells," and severe pains in the side. On the day before her death

Mrs. M. had remarked to a friend that she had a presentment that she would not live long.

Yet Mrs. M. was at the telegraph office with her husband at midnight on Monday, apparently

as well as ever. It was shown, too, that at the breakfast table yesterday Mrs M. requested

Mr. Matlock and Miss H., their boarder, to assent to a late dinner, as she wished to do

some washing and would prefer to have dinner at half past three o'-clock. One witness,

clerk at the vegetable market, saw the deceased alive at half past ten o'clock yesterday

morning when he carried vegetables ordered for dinner to her rooms. Another, a neighbor,

"saw the deceased standing at the window at half past eleven o'clock in the morning. The

verdict of the Coroner's Jury will be found below. Mr. Matlock left for South Bend last

evening with the remains of his wife, followed by the heartfelt sympathy of our citizens.

NOAH E. WARD
------------
Noah E. Ward was born Dec. 21, 1873, and departed this life Jan. 30, 1946, at the age of

72 years, 1 month and 9 days. On Jan. 26, 1901, he was united in marriage with Amy Finette

McCracken. To this union were born three daughters and three sons, one of whom died in

infancy. During his long and full life, which terminated after an illness of many months,

Noah was always happiest when surrounded by his family, friends and neighbors, and especially

happy when spared to celebrate his 45th wedding anniversary with his beloved wife just four

days before being called to his reward. With the exception of six years in Oklahoma, he spent

his entire life as a farmer in Van Buren county. He incurred the friendship of all with whom

he met and always stood ready and willing to aid friends or neighbors. As a young man he

confessed his faith in Christ, and united with the Harrisburg Baptist church, later transferred

to the Bonaparte Baptist Church, where he maintained a membership until death. He leaves to

mourn their loss, his wife, sons, James R., and Alvin G.; daughters, Mrs. Mary Willits, Mrs.

Tina Ewing, and Mrs. Hazel McIntosh. Also 13 grandchildren, three half brothers, John Matlock

of Moline, Ill., Charles Matlock of Keokuk, and Steve Matlock of Bonaparte, and four half

sisters, Mrs. Anna Burnett and Mrs. Tina Hornbaker, of Burlington, and Mrs. Dorothy Richards

of Tacoma, Wash., and Mrs. Nettie Holmes of Moline, Ill.  (Photocopy of this obit is located

on page 49 of Obit Book A found in the Van Buren County, Iowa Genealogical Society's collection

at the Keosauqua Public Library in November 1999. Name and date of newspaper not given.)
