Savannah Man Found Dead
on Track of Coast Line
Savannah, Ga., September
25-(Special)
Under mysterious
circumstances C H
Medlock, of this city,
who is well known in
Macon,
and other cities of the
state, was found dead
this morning near the
sixth mile post
of
the Charleston and
Savannah division of the
Atlanta Coast Line. The
right side of
his face and head had
been crushed in. The
news of the discovery of
the body was telegraphed
to Charleston, the
division headquarters.
In an effort to
ascertain the identity
of the body, Savannah
was acquainted with the
discovery, and after a
time it
was found that the body
was that of Mr. Medlock.
It is not known whether
the death was
due to an accident,
suicide or murder.
Officers are now
investigating. Mr.
Medlock had
not been seen by members
of his family or friends
since Thursday night, so
far as can
be
ascertained. His affairs
were in proper shape and
nothing of a financial
or domestic character is
known to have been
working. The body was
found with the head upon
the outer rail, the body
projecting at right
angle from the rail. Mr.
Medlock was in the
district messenger and
furniture removal and
storage business. He had
many contracts for
removals on his books.
He leaves a widow, his
second wife, and five
children.
1904 Sept 28 NO SOLUTION
OF MYSTERY
Jury Cannot Determine
the Cause of Medlock's
Death.
Savannah, Ga.,
September 27 (Special)
An
inquest was held this
morning to determine the
cause of the death of C
H Medlock,
who was found dead on
the tracks of the
Atlantic Coast Line
railroad, 6 miles from
Savannah, at 11 o'clock
Saturday night. The Jury
brought in a verdict as
follows:
"
We the jury, find that C
H Medlock came to his
death in a manner
unknown to this
jury. Further, that
there was before us no
evidence to show that
the death was caused
by
foul means. The evidence
before us tend to show
that the death was
caused by Mr. Medlock
being struck by a train
at the spot where he was
found, which train
cannot be determined by
us." The mystery of Mr.
Medlock's death
therefore, remains
unsolved.

1883 May 19 – The

property today.
1883 May 20 – By the
way, Old Man Medlock
gave $1000 for the
property sold by his
heirs the other day. He
bought it 26 years ago,
gave away a fourth of
the original purchase,
sold $1400 worth of it,
and the remainder after
supporting him all his
life, now brings
$80,000! One third was
in foreign capitol.
1883 May 24 – The Chain
of Title – the original
titles to the Medlock
property were
in
the office of the
superior court yesterday
to be recorded by the
clerk, no record having
been made heretofore.
The chain is perfect and
the old documents are
full of interest. The
property embraces 102
acres. In 1833 it was
sold by Thomas Oliver to
James H. Kirkpatrick for
$200. Kirkpatrick sold
in 1848 for $300 to
Sarah Patsy and
Sarah Johnson. In 1851
these 2 ladies sold to
Allen L. Johnson for
$620 who turned
around 4 days later and
sold to John W. Medlock
for $1000. Last week it
brought nearly $80,000.

mentioned is located
between Peachtree

sold by his heirs the
other day. He bought it

worth of it, and the
remainder after
supporting him all his
life, now brings
$80,000! One third was

24
May 1883 – The Chain of
Title – the original
titles to the Medlock
property were in the
office of the superior
court yesterday to be
recorded by the clerk,
no record having been
made heretofore. The
chain is perfect and the
old documents are full
of interest. The
property embraces 102
acres. In 1833 it was
sold by Thomas Oliver to
James H. Kirkpatrick for
$200. Kirkpatrick sold
in 1848 for $300 to
Sarah Patsy and Sarah
Johnson. In 1851 these 2

found their house open.
Room looked destroyed
and a trunk of hers was
missing so police
started a search. A kiln
tender had seen 3
buggies leave the house
at midnight, when police
followed tracks they
ended at river. On the
other side bloody items
of a woman’s clothing
and his hat were found.
People were speculating
about former lovers and
bands of coloreds. On
April 23rd
the couple was found in
bed asleep at their own
house. They had written
a silly cramped note not
appearing to be in their
hand saying they would
never be back. However,
they had a change of
heart near Dahlonega and
came home. He was 21 and

C.H. Medlock
of
this city, who is well
known in Macon and other
cities of the state, was
found dead near the 6
mile post on the
Charleston and Savannah
division of the Atlantic
Coast Line. The right
side of his face and
head had been crushed.
The news of the
discovery of the body
was telegraphed to
Charleston at division
headquarters. In an
effort to ascertain
the identity of the
body, Savannah was
acquainted with the
discovery, and after a
time
it
was found that the body
was that of Mr. Medlock.

the death
was due to accident,
suicide or murder.
Officers are now

seen by members of his
family or friends since
Thursday night, so far
as can
be
determined. His affairs
were in proper shape and

working. The body was
found with the head upon
the outer rail, the body
projecting at right
angle from the rail. Mr.

– No Solution to Mystery
- Jury Cannot Determine
Cause of Medlock Death -
Savannah, GA 27
September – An inquest
was held this morning to
determine the cause of
death of C.H. Medlock,
who was found dead on
the tracks of the
Atlanta Coast Line
railroad 6 miles from
Savannah at 11 o’clock
Saturday night. The jury
brought in a verdict as
follows: “We the jury
find that C.H. Medlock
came to his death in a
manner unknown to this
jury. Further, that
there was no evidence to
show that the death was
caused by foul means.
The evidence before us
would tend to show that
the death was caused by
Mr. Medlock being struck
by a train at the spot
where he was found,
which train cannot be
determined by us. Case
remains unsolved.”

Census list W.H. Medlock
age 33, born AL, living
Forsyth Co. According to
family information
William Medlock died on
8 February 1910and his
widow, Permelia Medlock
filed for her widow's
pension. She was granted
the pension. In 1914 the
state of Alabama,
Pension Bureau brought
charges against Permelia
stating that her husband
was a deserter,
therefore, she was not
eligible for a pension.
After several hearings
and affidavits, in a
decision on 4 February
1915 Judge F. S.
Ferguson of the Morgan
County, Alabama State
Board of Pension
Examiners approved the
pension in question in
case #4488 with the
comments "W. H. Medlock,
the husband of the
beneficiary, is charged
with having deserted
from Thunderbolt, July
18th, 1864. Mrs. Medlock
offers her own and the
affidavit of a comrade
of her husband which, by
inference, contradict
the charge. The charge
itself is rather vague
and I give the pensioner
the benefit of the
doubt. I order that she
is eligible to the
pension."
