Curtner Sept. 2, 1918 in Tippecanoe Co. IN. Georgia M died Jan 19 1946 Hammond

Co IN.

George M Hudspeth and his son Charles E Hudspeth both died on the same day.

This tragedy came as a shock to their family, for both were murdered. This

information came from a newspaper article, "The Pike County News" Vol XLII

Petersburg IN. Friday August 4 1911 The Pike County News had received their

information from The Greenville Democrat , Greenville MS. Headlines were :

Father and Son Engaged in Restaurant Business Shot in Cold Blood…At Shaw

Mississippi—Formerly Resided Here.

George had left Indiana and moved to Shaw MS where he had opened a restaurant.

Charles, his wife and daughter had followed George to Mississippi to help run

the restaurant. Trouble between A soda drink vender , C J Miller and the

Hudspeths had been going on for some time. On the fatal day an argument had

broken out which ended up in a gun fight, and the two Hudspeths lost the battle

with their lives. C J Miller pleaded self defense and was later acquitted.

Charles’s father-in-law Samuel Davis went to Shaw MS and had Charles body shipped

back to Lafayette IN for burial. Harriet, Charles wife and daughter Margaret also

had moved back to Lafayette to the home of her parents. George Hudspeth was buried

at Shaw Mississippi.

    Co IN. (book 126 pg 16) Hattie was born June 13 1885 and is the daughter of Sam

    T Davis.

   Draft on June 5 1917 from Tunica Co MS. Harry was tall with a medium build with

   light blue eyes and brown hair.

  3 JAMES BRET HUDSPETH born Dec 23 1893 IN. James married Pansy Wilson April 25

   1914 Poinsett Co Weiner AR by J P E. D B Walters. James registered for the

   World War I Draft on June 5 1917 from Poinsett Co AR. James was of a medium

   height and build with blue eyes and brown hair. James Brett died July 16 1917.

   Pansy Hudspeth married second Jesse Cartright and moved to El Dorado Butler

   Co KS. Pansy Wilson is believed to be the  daughter of William C and Annie L

   Wilson. Pansy was born July 1898 AR.

   James Bret Hudspeth enlisted in to the navy on May 21st,1909- James had lied

   about his age to join . James discharge was purchased by his mother, Georgia

   on Oct.6th,1911. James sent post cards showing that he was in Lafayette, Ind

   in 1911 & in Oct 1913 he sent a postcard from Weiner, Ark to his mother who

   still in Shaw, Ms

   Actual info from his Enlistment & Discharge papers:
   Enlisted May 21,1909 @ Terre Haute, Ind.. (Listed birth date as Dec 23,1891 vs.

   1893 to be 19 vs. 17 actual.) Height 5 feet 8 inches, weight 135 lbs, eyes lt.

   blue, hair brown, complexion fr-ruddy. Was paid in full $24.53 on Oct. 6th,1911

   on his Purchase Discharge dated Oct 3rd,1911 & signed on Oct 6th by the commander

   of the USS Salem.

   Purchase Discharge--Ordinary Seaman discharged by order of Oct 3,1911 & signed

   by the commander of the USS Salem on Oct 6th,1911

   (This was just after the shooting in Shaw, Ms.)

   OBIT For James Bret Hudspeth
   From Petersburg, Ind

   James Bret Hudspeth, son of Mr. & Mrs. George Hudspeth, died July 16 in Weiner,

   Arkansas of typhoid fever, after a weeks illness. The funeral was held at Weiner

   and the remains were interred there. He is survived by a wife & two children,

   also mother, and two brothers, Harry and Paul. Deceased is a nephew of City

   Clerk Charles Naney and formerly resided in this city.

   From Weiner, Ark
   J. Bret Hudspeth, better known as Fred was born December 23rd,1893 in Petersburg,

   Ind and departed this life July 16th,1917, living 23 years, 5 months and 23 days

   of age. He leaves a wife, son, Harry & infant daughter Georgia to mourn his loss.

   His mother and two brothers survive him.  Mrs. Georgia Hudspeth and Paul of

   Vincennes, Ind & Harry Hudspeth of Robinsville, Miss. His mother was with him at

   the time of his death, his brother Harry coming for the funeral. The funeral

   services were held from the Union church at Weiner, conducted by the Modern

   Woodrhdn of which Lodge he was a member. He enlisted in the navy at the age of

   17 and served his time. Interment took place in the Oak Grove cemetery at Weiner.

   The bereaved family has the sympathy of the entire community.

   1 Harry Franklin Hudspeth born Nov 16 1914 AR. Harry F. married Marie Angela

     Gutzwiller in Hammond ,IN on July 3,1937. Harry died May 5, 1995 address

     46360 Michigan City, La Porte IN (info from SS) Marie Angela Gutzwiller was

     born Sept 22 1916. Angela was the daughter of Henry Adolph Gutzwiller and

     Edith Donnelly. Angela died Jan 23 1985 and is buried next to Harry F Hudspeth

     in Merrillville IN.
