A Mathias Hilburn took up residence in Decatur (DeKalb Co., GA) January 1, 1827, purchasing

a house on the southeast corner of the square and Fayette, now McDonald St. Before moving

to Arkansas abut ten years later (1837), he succeeded in marrying his two daughters to a

couple of young Decatur lawyers, William I. Howard and Alfred B. Greenwood. (From Willard

In November 1842 Mathais Hilburn and several other white men stood as security for Stand

Watie, the Cherokee Indian who was later a Confederate General, in a murder charge at
