Notes from FTDNA:

DYS 19 is also known as DYS 394

HAPLOGROUPS and HAPLOTYPES:

The first and easiest thing to do, is to separate the individuals who are in different

haplogroups. For example, the first person in the list is in haplogroup J2, and the

next are in E3b and so on. Since anyone in different haplogroups will not have shared

a common ancestor for tens of thousands of years, they have been split apart. Different

haplogroup means they are unrelated.

Haplogroups in GREEN have been confirmed by SNP Testing. Haplogroups in RED have been

predicted by FTDNA based on unambiguous results in the individual's personal page.

Sometimes a person may have the same haplotype but not be related, due to the DYS#'s.

If there are more than 2 markers different in just the first 12 markers, of any group,

then they are unrelated. Note that 19782 is different from 20595 in the fourth, fifth,

and sixth markers (and more later) so they are unrelated, therefore they are separated.

The markers that are analyzed and shown occur on the Y-chromosome and are inherited as

a block of markers, each row defines a participant's haplotype for those 12, 25 or 37

markers.

It is possible to choose other combination of markers, say only 7 markers, and group

sequences according to 7-marker haplotypes. A recent research paper used 7-marker

haplotypes to analyze the distribution on these haplotypes in modern day Europe. Jims

Sims has looked at the distribution of 7-marker and haplotypes in Europe that

correspond to those of the participants in the Matlock/Medlock DNA study. He has mapped

the locations where each haplotype was found and the frequency of the haplotype among

the more than 12,000 sequences in that recent study. For comments or questions, please

Note: Keep in mind these facts when ordering your test:

According to FTDNA, when testing with 25 markers and if your a 25/25 match, it indicates:

Your perfect 25/25 match means you share a common male ancestor with a person who shares your surname

(or variant). These two facts demonstrate your relatedness.

Updating this to a 37 marker test, and matching 37/37 markers it indicates:

37/37 Your perfect match means you share a common male ancestor with a person who shares your surname

(or variant). Your relatedness is extremely close with the common ancestor predicted, 50% of the time,

in 5 generations or less and with a 90% probability within 16 generations. Very few people achieve this

close level of a match. All confidence levels are well within the time frame that surnames were adopted

in Western Europe

Doing the 67 Marker test, and matching 67/67 can close in a big gap:

67/67 Your perfect match means you share a common male ancestor with a person who shares your surname

(or variant). Your relatedness is extremely close with the common ancestor predicted, 50% of the time,

in 3 generations or less and with a 90% probability within 5 generations. Very few people achieve this

close level of a match. All confidence levels are well within the time frame that surnames were adopted

in Western Europe

ANCESTRAL SIGNATURE NUMBERS:

To determine the “modal” value for each group, also known as the ancestral signature,

look at each marker in each group and decide, based on the results, what would most

likely have been the original result for the shared common ancestor for each.  For

example, in the E3b group, everyone starts out with the same pattern: 13, 24, 13, etc.

The ancestral signature will be placed in BLUE in the line above it.

Next is to highlight the places where any of the group members has a different result

from the signature. This makes it easier to quickly spot any mutations. For example,

we see at a glance that 27895 and 34418 share the same mutation at marker 390. They

are more tightly related to one another than to the rest of the group because they

share a common ancestor who experienced that mutation.

MUTATIONS:

A heritable change that may occur in a gene or in a chromosome, and may take the form

of a chemical rearrangement, or a partial loss or gain of genetic material leading to

a different number of repeats of a certain sequence or change of one of the bases in a

sequence

Mutation rate :

The rate at which a mutation can happen. Although mutations happen randomly in time, and

one can see a mutation happening today between a father and son, different studies show

that mutations normally happen every 300-500 generations. A mutation rate of 0.003 means

one mutation every 333 years (1/333 equals 0.003)

MARKERS:

The DYS#'s in red have shown a faster mutation rate then the average, and therefore

these markers are very helpful at splitting lineages into sub sets, or branches,

within your family tree. Explained another way: If you match exactly on all of the

markers except for one or a few of the markers we have determined mutate more quickly,

then despite the mutation this mismatch only slightly decreases the probability of two

people in your surname group who match 11/12 or even 23/25 of not sharing a recent

common ancestor.

If you have 2 people who match, exactly, except on a single marker and that marker is one

that is highlighted in RED within your surname group then the current estimate of distance

between 2 people are related is probably overstated, and they are more closely related than

could be assumed by the distance suggested by a standard single marker deviation.

Marker 464 is a special marker, and you may notice that not all the highlights of the

differences are marked in the same way that the other markers were highlighted. This is

because nearly all men have four copies of marker 464. Each copy may have a different

value, which is why we may see different numbers for each. These values are listed, a

through d, from the smallest number to the largest number. For example, for kit 16510,

he has three 15s and one 16, whereas the ancestral signature is two 15s, one 16, and one

17.  His 17 changed to a 15, and since that is a smaller number than 16 the 16 moved to

slot d.  The 16 is not a mutation, but the third 15 is.  Marker 464 can jump more than

one step (such as from 17 to 15) just as easily as moving just one step (such as from 15

to 16, as with kit 23657), so we count it as a single mutation.

It is also to be noted that the eight with the 12 at 442 would be more tightly related to

one another than to the rest of the R1b that are highlighted in Yellow.  However, we cannot

say that all of the ones with the 11 are more closely related to one another than to the

ones with the 12 because the mutation to 12 happened recently, whereas the lineage has had

the 11 for a much longer period of time.

For those who have upgraded to the 37 markers:

37/37 Your perfect match means you share a common male ancestor with a person who shares your

surname (or variant). Your relatedness is extremely close with the common ancestor predicted,

50% of the time, in 5 generations or less and with a 90% probability within 16 generations.

Very few people achieve this close level of a match. All confidence levels are well within the

time frame that surnames were adopted in Western Europe

36/37 You share the same surname (or a variant) with another male and you mismatch by only one

'point' at only one marker--a 36/37 match. It's most likely that you matched 24/25 or 25/25 on

a previous Y-DNA test and your mismatch will be found within DYS 576, 570, CDYa or CDYb. Very

few people achieve this close level of a match. Your mismatch is within the range of most well

established surname lineages in Western Europe.

35/37 You share the same surname (or a variant) with another male and you mismatch by only two

'points' --a 35/37 match. It's most likely that you matched 24/25 or 25/25 on previous Y-DNA

tests and your mismatch will be found within DYS 439 or DYS 385 A, 385 B,389-1 and 389-2, from

our first panel of 12 markers, or from within the second panel at DYS #'s 458, 459 a, 459b, 449,

or within 464 a-d. If you matched exactly on previous tests you probably have a mismatch at DYS

576, 570, CDYa or CDYb in our newest panel of markers. Your mismatch is likely within the range

of most well established surname lineages in Western Europe.

34/37  You share the same surname (or a variant) with another male and you mismatch by three

'points'--a 34/37 match. Because of the volatility within some of the markers this is slightly

tighter then being 11/12 or 23/25 and it's most likely that you matched 24/25 or 25/25 on

previous Y-DNA tests. Your mismatch will most often be found within DYS 439 or DYS 385 A, 385

B,389-1 and 389-2 from our first panel of 12 markers, or within the second panel: DYS #'s 458,

459 a, 459b, 449, or within 464 a-d. If you matched exactly on previous tests you probably have

a mismatch at DYS 576, 570, CDYa or CDYb in our newest panel of markers. Your mismatch is likely

within the range of most well established surname lineages in Western Europe.

TMRCA - Time to the Most Recent Common Ancestor:

Relatedness is quantified by TMRCA, the Time to the Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA), which is

how many generations the two examined Y chromosomes are from a common ancestor. Estimates of TMRCA

are based on the observed number of mutations by which the two Y chromosomes differ. Since mutations

occur at random, the estimate of a TMRCA is not an exact number (i.e., 7 generations), but rather a

probability distribution. As one uses more and more markers, the distribution becomes tighter and

tighter about its mean value (its variance becomes smaller), and estimates have higher precision

*NOTE: SMG'S Martin L Matlock's  DSY Numbers came from Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation.

NOTE: 33418 Michael Smith, while not matching any other Smiths in their DNA project, has asked

to have his DNA numbers put where they do match. It so happens that Michael Smith matches Sam and

Albert 36/37. Michael matches Richard Matlick 25/25. Michael 's last known ancestor was Thomas M

Smith born abt 1834 SC. Since 27895 and 34418 share the same mutation at marker 390. They are more

tightly related to one another than to the rest of the group because they share a common ancestor

who experienced that mutation. Same applies to Herman C Smith.

NOTE: #0 A value of “0” for any marker indicates that the lab reported a null value or no result

for this marker. All cases of this nature are retested multiple times by the lab to confirm their

accuracy. Mutations causing null values are infrequent, but are passed on to offspring just like

other mutations, so related male lineages such as a father and son would likely share any null

values.
