   1 Joseph Manuel Rose Vargas born March 29 1894 RI. Joseph registered for WWI on Jan 5 1917

     from Newport RI. Joseph was short with a medium build, brown eyes and black hair. Joseph

     married and his occupation was a chauffeur. By 1920 Joseph was divorced and was living

     with his parents and 2 children. Joseph also registered for WWII. At that time Joseph

     was working at the US Naval Torpedo Station. Joseph died Feb 1971 Newport RI.

 

     JOSEPH VARGAS RITES
     The funeral of Joseph M. Vargas of 119 Prospect St., Middletown, a retired engineman at

     the old Torpedo Station, took place from the Memorial Funeral Home to St. Lucy's Church

     today. The Rev. Thomas O'Neill sang requiem high mass. Seated in the sanctuary was the

     Rev. Thomas B. Hart, pastor of St. Barnabas' Church in Portsmouth. Burial was in

     Middletown Cemetery where Father O'Neill, assisted by Father Hart, read the prayers.

     Bearers were Brelsford Wolfenden, Joseph White, Neil Peirson, Thomas Burke, Raymond

     Mosher and James Smith (Newport Daily News, Thurs Feb 4 1971)

 

     Joseph M. Vargas, 76, of 119 Prospect Ave., Middletown, was pronounced dead on arrival 
     at Newport Hospital yesterday morning after being stricken at the home of his daughter,

     Mrs. Lloyd Mosher, at 54 Sylvania Rd Portsmouth. He was taken to the hospital in the

     Portsmouth Volunteer Fire Department Ambulance. He retired 15 years ago after 17 years

     of civil service employment as an engineman in the power plant on Goat Island. He was an

     Army veteran of World War I, a member of the Retired Civil Employees Association, the

     Newport American Legion Post, and the Royal Arcanum. He was born in Middletown March 29

     1894 and was the son of Manuel S. Vargas and Serena Oliver Vargas. Besides Mrs. Mosher,

     Mr. Vargas leaves his wife, Mrs. Carrie Johnston Vargas; another daughter, Mrs. Leonard

     J. Abbott of Satellite Beach, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Charles Degnan, and a brother, Manuel

     Vargas, both of Largo, 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. (Newport Mercury and

     George A. Vargas Driver-Salesman
     George A. Vargas, 57, of 13 Ayrault St., a driver - salesman for Aquidneck Island Creamery
     died yesterday in Newport Hospital after a. short illness. He was born in Newport Nov 11,

     1903, a son of the late  Mr and Mrs. Manuel Vargas. He was employed by his father in the

     retail milk business for many years. Mr. Vargas leaves his wife, Mrs. Irene Seeger Vargas;

     a son, George D. Vargas: three brothers, Joseph M. any Frank Vargas of this city and Manuel

     Vargas of Florida; and a sister, Mrs. John T. Ramos of Camden, N. J. The funeral will be

     held Monday from the O'Neill Funeral Home. A requiem high mass will be sung in St. Joseph's

     Church 9 a.m. Burial will be in St Columba's Cemetery. (Newport Daily News, Sat March 25 1961)
